Prerequisites: must be of at least sophomore standing COURSE DESCRIPTION & GOALS This course is designed to provide basic information regarding drugs, alcohol, sun exposure, tobacco, mental and physical health, as well as other topics falling under the health category. Teaching skills for a lifetime commitment of health, making informed decisions, goal setting and understanding different components of health are amongst the top priorities. RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS: Students need basic computer skills as well as a computer with high speed Internet and access to Google Drive (via gmail). Students will also need a webcam or some type of video device (camcorder, smartphone, etc.) to record an assignment. Text- We will be using the Michigan Model for Comprehensive School Health curriculum, there is no physical text but a workbook will be provided as well as supplemental reading materials posted online. Please visit http://www.emc.cmich.edu/mm/ss/ss7-12color12.pdf for more information regarding the Michigan Model Curriculum. STUDENT LEARNER RESPONSIBILITIES/ATTENDANCE 1. Students will be respectful of others opinions and thoughts when posting online. 2. Students will check email daily and respond to instructor or other classmates in a prompt manner. 3. While this class is held online, attendance is extremely important. It is your job to check in daily and follow guidelines and deadlines for assignments. You are responsible for your learning in this course. 4. Students will be expected to post one discussion board post to blackboard weekly as well as comment on two other students posts by 11:59pm Sunday. Weekly review quizzes will be

available on Monday at 8:00 am and close Saturday at 11:59 pm. Students will also be expected to give one presentation at the end of the course (see assignments for more details). 5. Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated. Students are expected to follow the academic integrity rules as outlined in the Student-Parent Handbook.

GRADING SYSTEM Weekly quizzes 10 points each x 6 = 60 points Weekly discussion board posts (3 total/wk) 10 points x 6 = 180 points Final project = 110 points Total point total = 350 points 93-100 83-92 74-82 64-73 0-63 A (324-350 points) B (289-323 points) C (260-288 points) D (225-259 points) F (224 points or less)

WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS Each week students will read course materials and post one response to a prompt on the discussion board. Additionally students must comment on two other students posts. Weekly quizzes on the material presented from the weekly topic will be given, these are 10 question quizzes with a 30 minute time frame. The final project will consist of a presentation given on a one of the topics presented during the course. COURSE OUTLINE: Below is an outline of the units we will be covering using the MIchigan Model for Health. This list is subject to change. Unit 1: Social & Emotional Health Assertive communication, feelings, criteria for getting help, decision making & problem solving, conflict resolution skills, stress management, warning signs Unit 2: Nutrition & Physical Activity Health benefits of healthy eating, factors in weight control, healthy body image, nutrition information on food labels/health claims/ads, recommended amount of physical activity,

benefits of physical activity, consequences of inactivity, setting goals, advocate for community activity Unit 3: Safety Avoid and escape violence, maintain personal safety, resources to stop assault and prevent violence, advocate for nonviolence, access resources, healthy or. harmful relationships. Unit 4: Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drugs Health, legal, social, and financial consequences of use; influences; rules and laws; resources for drug-related info and help; impact of environment; messages that will encourage youth not to use or quit Unit 5: Personal Health & Wellness Consequences of sun exposure, safe alternatives to UV ray exposure, possible health/social/legal consequences of gambling, resources for gambling help, warning signs of stress, positive character in school community, stress management Unit 6: Healthy and Responsible Relationships Characteristics of healthy relationships, consequences of infection with STIs, how STIs are transmitted, health risks of various behaviors, STI testing, costs of teen parenting and pregnancy, situations requiring professional health services
