Whalen 1

Devin Whalen English 1102 Prof. Waterhouse 2/9/2014 For my inquiry project I have decided to research the topic of how music can be part of a persons identity and a societys identity. There are so many different genres of music out there, yet some people will only listen to one or two. I would like to know if people consider their music preference to be large portion of their personality or identity. I am interested in how music effects emotions as well as biological reactions. I am a psychology major and I am very interested in human behavior, but my passion is music. I love to listen and play music every chance I get. I consider my love for music to be a large portion of my identity. Everyone knows music arouses emotions in people, but those emotional correlations are very seldom studied. Researching this would answer many of my questions that I have had for a long time. Tekman, Hasan Grkan, Hortasu, Nuran. Music and social identity: Stylistic

This first article is about a study done with college students and correlations between

music and identity. This paper should be helpful because it is almost exactly identical to my thesis. The link may need to be tried twice in order to see the article. This second article is about a study done that focuses on the radio playlists and how they determine which music to play for the area in which the broadcast is located. This can give me a view of how a group might be identified by music. Ian Cross. Music as a Bio-cultural Phenomenon. This third article focuses more on the neuroscience aspects of music. It can basically explain what is going on in the brain while someone listens to music. This can help me see how similarly or differently people respond to music.

My plan for my multi-model project is to create a website that consists of all my research. I dont plan on just typing everything out, I would like to use as many different ways as I can , such as memes, videos, cartoons, etc. My audience will be anyone who is interested in music. I want them to learn the same things I did when I researched the topic. I plan to study my articles in full by the 17th. I want to then start finding ways of representing the data and displaying it on the website page. I would like to have a good

majority of my page done before the 26th.
