ECED 329 (Spring 2014) Lesson Plan Template Teacher Candidate: Robert Gilchrist 02/12/14 School: Ninety Six

Primary School Date and Time of Lesson:

Subject/Grade Level: Math/2nd

Description of Lesson: The lesson is to help the students understand how many ways they can get an amount of change. The students use pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters during the lesson. Lesson Title or Essential Question that guides the lesson: How to get to different amounts of change?

Curriculum Standards Addressed: Curriculum Standard(s)- CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.C.8: Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have? SC Academic Indicator(s): Measurement- Standard 2-5: Through the process standards students will demonstrate an understanding of combination of coins and bills, and linear, time, and weight measurements. Indicators 2-5.1 Use a counting procedure to determine the value of a collection of coins and bills. 2-5.2 Use coins to make change up to one dollar.

Lesson Objective(s): What should students know or be able to do by the end of the lesson? Objectives should be observable and measurable Antecedent: When given coins, the students should know how to differentiate each coin from one another and how to figure out the amount. Behavior: The students will understand how to get different amounts of change. Content: Mathematics Degree: Students should be able to perform the activity correctly (75-100%).

Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Before Lesson: Count the different coins. During Lesson: Figure out how to get different amounts of change. After Lesson: Understand how to get different amounts of change.

Materials/Resources: Coins, Pencils, Paper, Math Lesson Book Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge): 1st Grade Mathematics, Ability to count (ex. Addition & Subtraction)

Procedures: The students will get out their Math Lesson books and open to the pages containing the Counting Money section. Then, they will follow along with me as we go over the different coins (Quarters, Nickels, Dimes, and Pennies). I will write different amounts of change on the Smart Board/Promethean Board and we will work together in solving how you can get to the amounts by using the four different coins in combinations. Activity Analysis: Activity #1- I would put a combination of coins on the board and have the students add them to get the amount. This will help guide the students into the lesson and give them an understanding about change. Activity #2- I would put up different items with a price tag on the board and have a random combination of coins next to the items. The students would find out if the combination of coins is equal to the amount on the price tags. Technology Used: I would use the classroom Smart Board/Promethean Board to do the lesson and work. Differentiation/Accommodations/Modifications/Increases in Rigor: I would make sure that every student can see the work on the Smart Board/Promethean Board from their desks and that we go at a pace so that every student is working together.
