Lesson # 1 Date and Time of Lesson: March 31, 2014

Learning Objective: When given a list of addition and subtraction problems, students will complete the problems with 80% accuracy. Alignment with Standards:
(MATH) K.OA1 Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.

Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: Students need to know the importance and value the ability of addition and subtraction. These skills will be prevalent throughout their lives, so it is very important for each student to master the skill. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Objective: When given a list of addition and subtraction problems, students will complete the problems with 80% accuracy. Pre- Assessment: Complete addition and subtraction problems on the classrooms smartboard, as a whole group. During Assessment: Students will come to the board and answer questions, while working together. After Assessment: Students will be given an assessment with a number line and manipulatives to work out the addition and subtraction problems.

Lesson Objective(s)

Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Pre- Assessment: Complete addition and subtraction problems on the classrooms smartboard, as a whole group. During Assessment: Students will come to the board and answer questions, while working together. After Assessment: Students will be given an assessment with a number line and manipulatives to work out the addition and subtraction problems.

Use of Formative Assessment This lesson will be useful for students as it will teach the basic and fundamental skills needed to be successful in future grades, as well as throughout life situations that require addition and subtraction.

When given a list of addition and subtraction problems, students will complete the problems with 80% accuracy.

Accommodations: Students that face difficulty with counting and recognizing numbers and their value will be given a number line, as well as manipulatives such as beans or pennies to move to solve addition and subtraction problems. Students that face difficulty counting will be given a physical number line to place their beans or pennies on. Every student will have fill and total access to the teacher for additional assistance. Least restrictive environment will be implemented throughout the lesson, as well as throughout the classroom.

Materials: Classroom smartboard Math assessment Bag of beans Bag of pennies Number lines Actual Assessment Procedures: 1.) Ask students to identify other words that mean addition, or Plus. 2.) Ask them what are clues that suggest addition? (more, altogether etc.) 3.) Write 2+2=__ on the board and ask a student to read the problem. 4.) Discuss how you start your math problem from left to right. 5.) Model the steps of the addition problem. 6.) Practice with a few more addition problems. 7.) Allow a few students to come to the board and practice the addition problems. __________________________________________________________________ Ask students to identify words that mean subtraction or take away Ask students what clues suggest subtraction. (have left, gave away, took away etc.) Write 4-1=__ on the board and ask a student to read the problem Discuss how you start the math problem from left to right. Model the steps of the subtraction problem Practice with a few more subtraction problems Introduce the number line and show students how we start with the first number of the equation, and move however many spaces the next number in the equation tells us to. 8.) Model a subtraction problem with the number line. 9.) Allow students to practice by coming up to the board to practice. 1.) 2.) 3.) 4.) 5.) 6.) 7.)

Activity Analysis: The first activity that students will participate in will include identifying the correct operation. It becomes very easy to practice the correct steps with the wrong operation, which causes students to produce incorrect solutions. I believe that it is very important for the students to understand and identify which operation they are to complete. The next activity of the students practicing the addition and subtraction problems provides practice and repetition, which is required to master any mathematical skill. I believe that the students practicing on the board with peers will encourage and guide them to complete these problems independently.
