CHD 119: Introduction to Reading Methods, introduces beginner reading techniques such as, print and phonetic awareness,

reading comprehension, and alphabetic principles. By including this simple story map of the Chapter book Trumpet of the Swan, I reveal that I understand how to create a reading comprehension tool that can successfully help children make predictions about a storys plot.

Story Map Prediction for a Chapter Book


Title of the Book: The Trumpet of The Swan Setting: This book takes place in 1968 in a small town in Canada.

Characters: Main Characters: Louis (Swan), Serena (Swan), Sam Beaver (Young Boy)

Problem: The Trumpeter Swam Louis was born without a voice. Throughout his life he was made fun of for his inability to communicate with other swans. He has always wanted to learn the trumpet because he loves music. MAJOR PROBLEM: He wants to learn how to communicate (read and write) with others.

Action: Louis achieves his dream of learning how to play the Trumpet. Louis goes to school to learn to read and write. The teacher provides him with a chalkboard. He begins communicating by writing on a chalkboard that he wears around his neck.

Outcome: He becomes confident in his communication abilities. He begins communicating both verbally and nonverbally with this friends.
