Argumentative Assignment/Genre Response- Final Unit Assignment Throughout this unit we have studied the concept of Dystopia versus

the notion of perceived Utopia. We have not only identified our own classifications for both types of societies, but also discussed ways in which perception of one or the other can be altered through different meanse.g. personal gain, privilege, ideas of common good, etc. Dystopias dont simply exist in worlds of nuclear warfare and eliminated resources. Weve examined different angles in which Dystopias and Utopias can be interpreted, as well as a set of standards and general guidelines that dictate one from the other. Using a book from the list providedunless you have a specific one you would like to useyou will write an essay presenting a dystopian or utopian society of your choice, and creating an argumentative essay showing to the reader why the society exists as it does, how it exists as it does, and whether or not its fundamentally utopian or dystopian? Your essay should: Address and identify concepts of a dystopian universe Create and present claims that identify why this universe is dystopian Use textual evidence from class, as well as from the text you choose to read, to back your claims When utilizing warrantsgeneral assumptions or beliefsabout dystopias you must have qualifications (proof or citing from a text) that back the warrant Paper must contain an introduction, thesis (initial claim), body paragraphs (present claims, counter claims, etc.) arguing your position, and a conclusion Must include examples from at least 3 of the texts in class, the paper is on your novel though and these texts are simply working as evidence of other dystopian universes Paper must be 3-5 pages double space, 12-point Times New Roman Font, and be formatted in accordance with MLA

Suggestions for Getting Started Look at multiple angles of a dystopia as we have discussed it; think about things like: Leaders of the novels particular world The general public of the novel Main characters Assessment of the quality of living Dystopia or utopia for whom? A specific pocket of citizens, or for all? Analyze and identify qualifiers of a dystopia both as you as an individual may interpret it, as well as how the greater whole may observe it. Present both your definition of Dystopia and your perception of the novels world Do these two line up? Develop a claim as to why/why not particular society represented is a dystopia.

Requirements and Page Length Use at least 5 quotes, (2 must be from texts from class, the other 3 from the text) to back up your claims of what it means to be or not to be a dystopia 3-5 pages double spaced, typed, 12 pt.
