Standard 6 Standard 6 specifically promotes professionalism within the Early Childhood Education field.

Professionalism is achieved by utilizing ethical standards, engaging in informed advocacy, and continuing ones education to better serve young children. As a professional, I strive to create a diverse, inclusive, and nurturing classroom environment, while promoting ethical standards. I decided to include an Ethical Conduct worksheet I completed during CHD 205: Guiding the Behavior of Children, to show that I understand important principles of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct. This worksheet includes a reflection on how I will handle various ethical scenarios that may occur in the classroom. I reveal within these reflections that I understand NAEYCs number one principle, Above all, we shall not harm children and can promote the safety of each child regardless of the situation. This artifact displays that I am a professional because I understand ethical principles and problem solving techniques when faced with difficult decisions. I am heavily involved in the Early Childhood Education field because I have been working as a caregiver for over 4 years. All classes that I have taken within the Early Childhood Education program at NOVA have promoted the use of professionalism while in the presence of children. I have learned the importance of advocating within the community, always considering current issues that effect our field, and striving to become a better teacher. I have yet to advocate for young children in my community, but I plan on heavily promoting how important music, art, and movement programs are within the early childhood classroom. I want to educate parents and early childhood professionals especially on how the arts support all developmental domains. I am very serious about becoming a professional within this field because I am continuing my education, as well as shadowing experienced early childhood educators to better understand this field.

Situation 02 - A parent who is obviously drunk comes to pick up her child. A. What can or should you say and do? (Focus on the ethics). I would not release the child into the parents custody! B. What are some of the possible negative consequences for you, by saying/doing these? The parent could become extremely angry (especially if intoxicated) and could become physical. C. Situation 03 - You see a child left alone in a car in the school parking lot. A. What can or should you say and do? (Focus on the ethics) I would first look around to see if a parent or guardian is near. I would stay by the car and if no one comes within 20 minutes I would call the police. B. Situation 04 - You hear co-workers making racially/culturally inappropriate remarks about a family. A. What can or should you say and do? (Focus on the ethics) I would address my concerns with the co-worker. If this does not improve the situation, I would go to a supervisor and inform them of the situation. B. What are some of the possible negative consequences for you, by saying/doing these? The co-worker could be put off by the fact that I told them my concerns with their behavior. If the inappropriate behavior doesnt stop and I tell a supervisor, the co-worker could become very upset with me. C. What Principle (not Ideal) in the Code guides your decision making? P-3B.4If we have concerns about a colleagues behavior, and childrens well-being is not at risk, we may address the concern with that individual. If children are at risk or the situation does not improve after it has been brought to the colleagues attention, we shall re- port the colleagues unethical or incompetent behavior to an appropriate authority.
Situation 05 - A co-worker asks you to cover for her while she runs an errand; she is not on break. A. What can or should you say and do? (Focus on the ethics) Because this could effect the adult/child ratio and other regulations, I would tell her/him that I cannot cover the shift. I would tell her she could run it later. B. Situation 06 - Your director asks you to go into a different room to provide coverage during a licensing visit, in order to meet ratios. A. What can or should you say and do? (Focus on the ethics) Since it is my director I would follow her instructions but after the visit I would express my concerns about the situation. B.
