ENG4U 1 ENG4U Culminating Performance Task (CPT) Objective This assignment is meant to help you improve the analytical

and essay writing skills acquired throughout the course by reading and analyzing a text beyond its literal level, participating in a conference with the teacher, and writing a five page analytical essay. The CPT consists of three parts:

Part 1 - Annotated Notes

Due: ______________

Annotations are notes that you make as you read your novel (usually done on a post-it note or in the margins of the text). The goal of making annotations is NOT to make a plot index of the text. Instead, it is to make a record of your observations and developing understanding of significant quotations, as you work towards formulating a thesis for your essay. Your annotated notes should include commentary on: characterization literary devices symbolism rhetorical devices chronology or style of narrative narrative perspective diction allusions authors development of theme

Please note that plot summaries will not be graded!

Part 2 - Conference

Due: ______________

Based on the reading and analysis of your novel, form an original thesis statement on (a) the author's treatment of an issue in the novel OR (b) the writers style OR (c) the impact of the novel on other writers or the public OR (d) how the author develops a major theme in the novel. Each student will participate in a 10 minute conference with the teacher. At this conference, you will be discussing your annotations and your developing thesis statement for the essay. This is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your understanding of the novel as a whole and to get feedback on your plans for your essay. Completion of the conference is a necessary

ENG4U 2 pre-requisite for the rest of the assignment. Without a conference, you will not be permitted to write the essay.

Part 3 - Formal Analytical Essay

Write a formal analytical essay of about 1200 words (approximately 5 pages), referencing 23 academic resources from reliable web or print sources. (No SparkNotes, Wikipedia, or other online essays!!!) Your entire essay should follow MLA guidelines, and should include a Works Cited page.
