Objectives: SWBAT recall names of foreign instruments with pictures and sounds. SWBAT demonstrate understanding of Asian music by filling out a crossword puzzle. SWBAT match pictures of instruments with its corresponding name and country. SWBAT demonstrate understanding of Octave vs. Pentatonic with drawings to represent each. PA Academic Standards: 9.1.5.B: Recognize, know, use and demonstrate a variety of appropriate arts elements and principles to produce, review and revise original works in the arts. 9.1.5.C: Know and use fundamental vocabulary within each of the arts forms. 9.1.5.J: Apply traditional and contemporary technologies for producing, performing and exhibiting works in the arts or the works of others. 9.2.5.G: Relate works in the arts to geographic regions: Asia. NAfME Standards: 6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music. 7. Evaluating music and music performances. 9. Understanding music in relation to history and culture. Social Studies Core Standards: CC.8.5.6-8.G: Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts. Materials/Equipment: Recordings, white board and markers, blank paper, pictures, magnets, tape, PowerPoint, projector. Activities and Procedures: Anticipatory Set: Ask students if anyone researched the purpose of Saraswatis four arms. If they know, have them write it on a piece of paper and hand it in. Bonus for whoever is correct. Go through everything we learned in the past few classes. Verbally ask questions to review important points. Lesson Sequence: 1. Show revised PowerPoint of Eastern Asia. Have students fill in names of some instruments and countries on PowerPoint. 2. Play game with pictures of instruments and names of the instruments and their corresponding country. Have students rearrange each so they match picture, name and country. 3. Pass out a blank sheet of paper. On one side, have students draw something that represents OCT- and the other side, PENTA-. Make sure they label it and name their creation.

4. Hand out crossword puzzle and have students fill it out. When a student is finished, if they are confident in their answers allow them to come to the board and fill out one answer on the projection. Closure: Evaluation: Entire class period serves as evaluation of past lessons. Asking questions throughout the lesson will serve as an evaluation of understanding. Drawing activity will reinforce understanding of OCT- and PENTA-. Crossword puzzle reinforces knowledge of each section of Asia we learned about. Assignment: No Assignment.
