Teacher: Amanda DeMarco Subject: The Clarinet Grade: 8th Date: April 25, 2014 Time: 40 minutes Behavioral

Objectives: SWBAT list the two types of etudes and their purposes. SWBAT explain how to produce a sound out of the clarinet using vocabulary like reed, vibrations, and mouthpiece. SWBAT classify all different types of the clarinet (Eb, Bb, A, Alto, Bass). SWBAT identify different styles of music the clarinet can be played with. SWBAT describe characteristics of each style of music learned. SWBAT demonstrate their knowledge of clarinet history by answering questions verbally and a quiz at the end of class. PA Academic Standards: 9.1.8.D: Demonstrate knowledge of at least two styles within each art form through performance or exhibition of unique works. 9.2.8.B: Relate works in the arts chronologically to historical events. 9.2.8.C: Relate works in the arts to varying styles and genre and to the periods in which they were created. 9.2.8.J: Identify, explain and analyze historical and cultural differences as they relate to works in the arts. 9.3.8.C: Identify and classify styles, forms, types and genre within art forms. NAfME Standards: 6. Listen to, analyze, and describe music 7. Evaluating music and music performances. 9. Understanding music in relation to history and culture Materials/Equipment: YouTube.com clips (from computer), speakers, copies of sheet music, clarinets. Activities and Procedures: Anticipatory Set: When class begins, students will listen to clip of Spongebob Squarepants Theme Song from YouTube.com. They will be asked to identify the song. While song is playing, pass out worksheet packet. Lesson Sequence: Ask students, What instrument am I holding? Answer: the clarinet. Ask students, What character plays the clarinet in the show? Answer: Squidward. Read through questions in packet very quickly. Have students fill in answers as we go. Teacher will give a brief history of the clarinet and its creation. o Use years and dates they know to connect with the year the clarinet was invented. Eg: 1776 (Declaration of Independence), 1861 (Civil War) Explain how the clarinet produces sound. Relate this to science class with vibrations and sound waves.

o Use the example of making sounds with a piece of grass between the thumbs. Explain that the air passing between your thumbs and the blade of grass makes the grass vibrate, which creates the sound. While passing out copies of music (so they can follow along) explain that wetting the reed is essential for good sound production. o Show them good reed/mouthpiece setup. Demonstrate how sound is made by playing two etudes. o The first time, have students listen while thinking of the questions on the worksheet. The second time, have students follow along with the music passed out earlier. By the time I am finished performing both etudes, students will have an answer to the question written down. o After performing, ask for volunteers to share their answer with the class. o Explain that technical etudes are usually faster and help to develop dexterity and articulation, while melodic etudes are slower and help develop tone quality and phrasing. o Ask students, Do you have any questions about the music you are looking at? Introduce other clarinets o Give brief history of each o Show instruments to the class o Perform on each so students understand various sounds Introduce types of music the clarinet can be played with (classical, cultural/ethnic, jazz, 20th century, movies/musicals). o Explain each different style and how the clarinet is used in different ways. Students will listen to YouTube clips of different styles of music that the clarinet can be played. Students will write what style they think it is and why on the worksheet. o At the end of the activity, replay the YouTube clips and go over answers to see how many the students guessed correctly. Take 1-2-3 Quiz. o When finished with quiz, have students raise their hand so teacher can come and collect completed worksheets.

Closure: Collect worksheets when students are finished with 1-2-3 Quiz. Evaluation: Students will take a 1-2-3 Quiz about the material learned where content in each answer corresponds to the questions number. Ex- 1. Name one composer mentioned today. 2. Name two other types of clarinets you learned about. 3. List three things you learned in this lesson that you did not know before. Assignment: Have students go home and find one song that has a clarinet in it. It can be any style of music, but the clarinet must be heard. Write down the songs title, artist, and what time in the song you can hear the clarinet. Bring in to the next class and share findings with Mrs. Herd.
