Teacher: John: Teacher: John: Teacher: John: Teacher: Gestures to John to take his headphones off? [No response] [Moves closer, smiling and mimes taking the headphones off] Hey John, could you remove the earphones please? Eh? The earphones take them off please. What for? Because Im talking to the group, and you cant hear what Im saying. [Looks round the room at the other students]. Theres some great work going on over there, well done Stacey, Haley youve cracked it. Im fine, I can hear. John, you cant listen to two things at once. Do you want me to look after them until the end of the lesson or do you want to keep them in your pocket? I can hear. John, lets not get into an argument itll entertain the others and neither of us wants that. Nah. Im not botherin anybody else youre just making crap rules. Why are you always picking on me anyway? You never pick on any of them. [Pointing to others in the group.] Look, if you really want to talk about the rules you can come back and see me at lunch time and we can talk for the whole 45 minutes but for now you know what youve got to do. Im not taking them off [Speaks quietly to John 1:1 out of earshot from the rest of the group] Listen John, the improvement in you this term has been amazing. All the staff have been commenting on the way youve got stuck in and started sorting things out. Dont blow all that good effort it over this. At the moment youre the only one wearing earphones and we all have to follow the same rules. Its better you keep them in your pocket than me taking them. You can put them on after the lesson which is only 20 minutes away. Im going to go over to help some of the others and give you a minute or two to think about it OK? [A few minutes after the teacher has walked away John removes the headphones and puts them in his pocket]. [Returns to John and says quietly] Fantastic John, thank you. I knew youd do the right thing. Thats what I mean about getting stuck in youre doing well mate, keep it up.
