Ashley McAdam Main Headline: Career Research Interview Part 2 I did my interview with Adam Procino, an IMC Physical

Therapist, on the 25th of September 2013 at 1:00pm. In my report I will review the interview topics we discussed, what I learned about my career choice, and how I feel I did on the interview. Interview Topics During my interview with Adam we talked about 1) What schooling you will need to get done to become a physical therapist 2) What colleges my interviewee attended 3) What are some frustrations about the job 3) What are some benefits and frustrations about the job 4) If I wanted to become a Physical Therapist what is the first step to take towards it 5) What are all the classes I should be taking to go towards getting this career 6) What type of physical therapy Adam, my interviewee, specializes in 7) What kind of work he does for his job 8) When you are a physical therapist are you married to your job? 9) How often youd have to renew your license 10) precautions you have in this career. 1) The schooling you need to get done to become a physical therapist is 6 years in Undergrad school and Grad School 2) He attended University of Buffalo, located in Buffalo New York for his Undergrad school and he went to Daemen College in Amherst New York for his Grad school. 3) Some of the benefits he said he has in his job are working with his patients and seeing their outcomes. He says its beneficial seeing all of his patients successes. Some frustrations he mentioned to me were working for a big cooperation, having them tell you what you can and cannot do, also all the paper work you have to get done. He said mainly just the business behind physical therapy is a frustration. 4) He said if I wanted to become a Physical Therapist the first step I should take towards it would be to take science classes in college. (Biology, Physics,

Chemistry, Physiology.) 5) He said all the classes I should be taking to go towards getting this career are all sciences, statistics, sociology, or psychology. 6) The type of Physical therapy he specializes in is Neurologic adult physical therapy (16+) ex: strokes, spinal cord injuries, head injuries, amputations, Guillain-Barre, MS (multiple- sclerosis), Parkinsons, critical illness polyneuropathy. 7) The kind of work he does for his job is Work with the patients listed above to get them to their highest level of function. Ex: a lot of patients come in dependent for mobility and when they leave hopefully independent. If they are not independent we train the family in how to help their loved ones. 8) Is he married to his job? He says, I love my job but when I leave it doesnt come home with me. 9) You have to renew your Physical Therapist license every year and every two years you have to have 30 hours of continuing education. (Mobile conferences) Where are those courses located? -You can take them online, courses/conferences will come through your cities and it will be a weekend course. Usually have to do 2 or 3 courses. When you work for big corporations you have to take mandatory education (quizzes). 10) Precautions you have in this career are some patients have diseases and when you work with them youll need to wear mask, gloves, and gowns, it depends on the situation. He also told me you have to be CPR certified (every two years). If you get stagnate or feel like youve done your best in a certain field you can switch and work in a different Physical Therapy field. (Orthopedic PT, Pediatric PT, home health, Geriatrics, sports medicine, you can even teach PT.) Something I found interesting that he told me is that he never dreads going to work every day. He said every day you just feel fulfilled after helping people reach their independence all day. He said a fun thing about his job is when youre a PT (depends where) you get students twice a year for 10-12 weeks and it keeps you up to date on new information and technics and it reminds you of how much you know because you have to teach it to the students. A good thing about being a

Physical Therapist at a hospital is you get to work with different health care workers for example: Doctors, nurses, social workers, speech therapist, occupational therapist, psychologist, pharmacist, etc. Analysis of career choice After my interview with Adam I learned a lot about Physical Therapist and what you have to do for your job. I learned its a lot of hard work but helping other people recover and see that big smile on their face makes it all worth it in the end. Analysis of my interview process I personally think my interview went very well. I before hand only had a couple questions written down to ask but my the end of the interview I came up with a lot more to ask. I expected my interview to only be a half hour-hour long but I ended up staying and interviewing for about 2-2 and a half hours. I feel when youre talking to someone your not really close with, if youre talking about a subject that really interest you, its a lot easier to talk about it. Also you dont necessarily need to have a ton of questions written out before you do your interview because during it youll come up with/think of a ton you would have never even thought about asking. Closing paragraph I learned a lot more than I expected to learn. It was a really good experience for me, Im glad this was an assignment. I now know what I will need to do to further my education towards becoming a physical therapist. At the college Jordan campus I am attending they offer a Physical Therapy Assistant program and I think Im going to look further into that. Ill have to set up a meeting to get with my advisor and go through the different classes that I should register for that will go towards this career such as those different science classes, etc. I just graduated from high school June 2013 and had no idea what I wanted to go to college for, but now I think I have a pretty good idea. I am super excited and cannot wait!
