Description of Lesson: Students will be given a presentation on literary terms and devices in which they will learn how literary devices are used in and out of academic settings. After the presentation is over, students will be expected to complete a handout and give their own examples of literary devices.

Lesson Title: Literary Devices in the Classroom and in Pop Culture

Curriculum Standard(s) Addressed:

Common Core Standard(s): CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.9-10.5 Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.9-10.5a Interpret figures of speech (e.g., euphemism, oxymoron) in context and analyze their role in the text.

Cross Curricular Connections: Students will learn to effectively read and follow instructions for their tests. Essentially, they will be more aware of how to follow directions carefully and attentively in their other classes as well as this one. This will improve upon their instructional readings in math, science, and history. Students will also learn test-taking skills during the presentation.

Instructional Objectives Criteria: Given a handout and presentation on literary devices, students should be able to identify example of said literary terms on their own. By the end of the lesson students should be able to define and give examples of all of the literary devices listed in the presentation. Students should be able to define the terms 80% of the time, and give labeled examples of literary devices 70% of the time. 9-10.5 & 9-10.5a.

Assessments:

Pre-assessment: Students will be given a handout with definitions and examples of literary devices, and we will discuss what they already know about the given terms. During assessment: Students will be expected to match the definition to the examples of literary devices. Post-assessment: Once they have matched all of the items on the list to an example, they will be required to give their own examples of at least two of the literary devices listed. Students must label their own examples so that I am aware of what literary device they are giving an example of.

Materials/Resources: Pencils/pens, notebook paper, whiteboard, dry erase marker, smart-board, internet access, candy to reward active students, and handout of literary terms. Prerequisites: Students will need a foundation-level knowledge of simple literary terms. Students will need to be able to cooperate in an orderly manner.

References: n/a Procedures: To begin class I will ask students if they are familiar with any of the terms listed on their sheets. I will then give a brief overview of literary terms and devices. Once I have completed a simple overview, I will begin the presentation on literary terms. I will periodically stop to check for understanding of each and every student present. When students raid their hand and are called on they will receive a reward for their participation and attention. I will then show a video on similes and metaphors used in pop culture. I will ask students how literary terms can be useful outside of the classroom. I will then give them more examples of the literary terms listed on their sheets. Once the lesson is over, I will ask them to flip their handouts over and complete the worksheet that reviews literary terms. They will also be asked to give at least two example of their own literary devices (labeled.) Accommodations: Any student in the class who struggles immensely with this activity and scores low on the assessment quiz can meet with me after school to have questions answered. Students with special needs will be allowed to take extra time on the quiz as needed. Students with trouble seeing may sit at the front of the class in order to see the board more clearly. Students who have any questions regarding the lesson are encouraged to ask for help both during and after class. One on one time with me is always available.
