UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA: The Three Branches of Government LESSON OBJECTIVE: The student will be able to recognize and define the three parts of the United States Government with 100% accuracy. The student will also be able to categorize examples of the 3 parts of Government with 100% accuracy given a Smart board activity and quiz game. STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
Content Standard: 4.0 Governance establishes structures of power and authority in order to provide order and stability. Civic efficacy requires understanding rights and responsibilities, ethical behavior, and the role of citizens within their community, nation, and world. 4.01 Discuss the structure and purposes of governance.

MATERIALS: ! Power Point presentation on the branches ! Smart board ! Smart board activity ! Buzzer ! Awards (candy) ! Sticky note ! Pencils BACKGROUND and RATIONALE: ! Key concept: Placing the correct part of the government in its corresponding branch ! Academic language: Government, judicial, legislative, and executive, graphic organizer ! This particular lesson builds on the students knowledge of what government is and will take them to a place where they can add to that by being able to tell the difference between the three branches and what is in each branch. This lesson will also include the students to use the computer lab/ portable lab provided by the school. (that being if they have the material) ! This lesson will then lead to the teacher going further into breaking up the different parts and going deeper. ! Since we have never worked with these students we do not have differential activities already planned. We will place students in groups and will put them in such groups according to where we see fit as the class progresses.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE: ! Introduction: (The Power Point for the students will be already opened on each computer) The students will be seated in the computer lab and asked as they are being seated to remain quite and to not touch the computers till further instructions are given. ! Greetings and introduction to our selves (3 mins) Begin the class with some open-ended questions on what they already know about the Untied States government.
-What is the government? -What does the Government do? -What kind of People work in the Government? (Etc.) (5 minutes)

Procedures: We will then present a Power point that will break down the three branches of the government. The students will be asked to follow along on their screen. As we go along we will ask the students to read the information aloud to the class- calling on a different student each time (10 mins) We will then review with them the information we just went over by asking questions that pertain to the slides just gone over. (3 mins) ! We will then move to the Smart board where a Graphic organizer in a shape of a tree will be presented. The students will be asked to come up to the board (we will need 10 students) to then place the particular people, places or things just as a court house or the congress with their corresponding branch. As the students are doing this activity, they will be asked to describe what the item they are moving is to the best of their ability. (10 mins) ! Closure: As we wrap up the lesson, we will end the lesson with a quiz game. The students will be divided into teams where they will then send one person at a time from each team to answer a question that will appear on the board. Examples: What branch of the government is the President in? or the Governor of a State? The first person to hit the buzzer gets to answer, if correctly answered that team will receive a point. The team with the most points will win- receiving an award. (15 mins) To then finish the class, we will then go over once again that the branches of the government are separate but equal, and then give an equal award to the remainder of the class. (2 mins) We will then pass out a sticky note asking the students to write one thing they learned form the lesson today and turn it in as they leave the class or get ready for the next lesson. (3 mins)

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE: Formative: Open-ended questions will help us gather where the students stand. Summative: The smart board activity as well as the quiz game and exit ticket will provide a way for us to formally see where the students stand on the material. MODIFICATIONS: ! I will pair those students that are low-level learners with those who are at level learners. Higher level learners will be asked higher ordered questions and asked to see if they can identify people and places that are linked with the three branches of government.
