UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA: Cells LESSON OBJECTIVE: TLW identify the major parts of the cells such as the nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall and cytoplasm. TLW compare and contrast the basic structures and functions of animal and plant cells. STANDARDS ADDRESSED: SPI 0507.1.1 Identify the major parts of plant and animal cells such as, the nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall, and cytoplasm. SPI 0507.1.2 Compare and contrast basic structures and functions of plant and animal cells Iste.nets.s: Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate and use information. Students: a. Plan strategies to guide inquiry b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks. -Microsoft Word -Fun Quiz BACKGROUND and RATIONALE: The key concepts of this lesson is for the student to be able to identify major parts of the cells and to be able to differentiate an animal cell from a plant cell. The critical academic language are as followed: cell, nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall and cytoplasm. In this lesson, I will teach about the animal cell. In subsequent lessons, I plan to further explain the difference in a plant cell. For the fast learners, I will give them fill in the blank and matching worksheets for enrichments. For the slow learners, I will give them easier worksheets for practice and I will do a more detailed lecture. PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE: Introduction: (20min) -TTW write the objectives on the board. -TTW tell the class the objectives. -The class will complete a KWL chart together on the smart board. -TTW play a video about plant and animal cells. -TTW further explain the major parts of an animal cell with a prezi. Procedures: (35min) -TTW pass out the plan sheet. -TTW explain how to create the table. -TTW demonstrate how to do the table. -TTW tell the students to open Microsoft Word. -TTW tell the students to insert a 2 (columns) by 15(rows) table. -TSW use the provided sites to search for information. http://www.biology.ualberta.ca/facilities/multimedia/uploads/cell_biology/plantcell_DD. html http://www.biology.ualberta.ca/facilities/multimedia/uploads/cell_biology/animalcell_D D.html http://www.glencoe.com/sites/common_assets/science/virtual_labs/E08/E08.html http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/cell_model.htm -TSW complete a table using Microsoft word. -TTW monitor and assist as needed. -When all students are done with their tables. The students will come to the board one by one to participate in the interactive activity of labeling the cells. Closure: (15min)

-TTW show the students how to operate the fun quiz site. -TSW complete the fun quiz. -TTW monitor and assist as needed. ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE: TTW collect the scores from the quizzes Microsoft word tables as a summative assessment. TTW monitor the students cooperation with the interactive activity as a formative assessment.

MODIFICATIONS: List specific modifications for students who did not master the objectives. -TSW draw a cell. -TSW complete another worksheet for practice with the help of a teacher. List specific modifications for students who are ready for enrichment activities. -TSW pick a part of the cell to tell a story about. -TSW complete a jigsaw puzzle that includes cell terms.
