Hania Elkady Slug: Differences between AUC and AUB Finances.

Synopsis: As we seen lately, the budget deficiency that hit AUC has escalated this year. So, after a quick comparison between the AUC and AUB Fact Book, one can draw some differences in income revenues versus expenditures elements. Pitch: The first impression one gets from reviewing the AUC finances that something is not balanced, and that returns to the fact that some items in the income revenues dont match their expenditure. Another thing that caught my attention lies in the research percentage; as its expenditure percent is really small, even if the income generated from research is not big, yet at its peak in 2010-2011 as 11.0% research income, the corresponding expenditure was 5.0% research expenditure. The second obvious aspect lies in the constant increase of the bulky element of the university income academic program tuition more than the rest of the income elements. Its percent went up from 53.20% in 2001, 60.40% in 2007 till 63.1% in 2012. At the same time, the expenditure income spent on academic and academic support doesnt correspond to that increase as the percentage spent on academic and academic support was 48.60& in 2001, fluctuated a bit in recent years till 2012 with 49.7%. After looking at both the statistics of AUC and AUB, it seems like both have the same distribution of income and expenditures; as in income it mostly depends on tuition; that has been increasing over the years, although in 2012; the AUB tuition didnt reach that of AUC (40% versus 61%). So, the main concern in AUC is trying to balance a little bit our income and

expenditure elements so that the budget deficiency would decrease and creates a balance between the elements from which income is generated and elements its spent on Internet sources: 1-From AUB Fact book Direct link to AUB Fact book: (http://www.aub.edu.lb/oira/institutional_research/Documents/FB201213.pdf) Karma El Hassan, Director of Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, AUB Extension: 3131/0 Email: kelhasan@aub.edu.lb -Possible questions for Karma (or letting her direct me to the person Im supposed to work with) 1-How do you balance in the case of a budget deficiency? 2-What could be done in order to decrease the dependence on Tuition fees as the primary source of income for the university? 3-Do you think its better if we increased the percentage of the research of the university in terms of income and thus increase it, in terms of expenditure for the sake of the students? 2-From AUC Fact book: Rasha Sadek Radwan (or let her direct me to the one responsible for conducting the finances section) Director of Institutional Research
