Clearinghouse The Womens Center serves as the campus link to programs, events, and activities relevant to women. Visit our website or call for info. Programs The Womens Center collaborates with other departments and offices to provide special programming complementary to its mission. Support and Referrals Staff will provide support and referral information for those in need. Meeting Space The Womens Center provides a comfortable atmosphere in which to hold group meetings. Programs, Groups & Organizations

The Womens Center regularly hosts meetings of: Presidents Commission on the Status of Women Womens Studies Reading Group RockOUT (SRUqueercommunity) Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance (FMLA) The Clothesline Project (CLP) is a program started on Cape Cod, Massachusetts in 1990 to address the issue of violence against women. It is a vehicle for women affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a shirt. They then hang the shirt on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of violence against women. The Womens Center is the conservator of the SRU Community Alliance Clothesline Project. The project consists of over 150 shirts created for victims and survivors of interpersonal violence, both on campus and in the surrounding community. It is available for loan to student and community organizations. Contact the Womens Center for more information.

Purpose
The Womens Center is an on campus resource center serving students, staff, faculty, and members of the surrounding community. Located in 007 BSB, the Womens Center strives to enhance the lives of women at SRU. The Womens Center staff work collaboratively to: Educate the campus community about womens contributions to society Recognize, celebrate, and promote the multicultural realities of womens lives Challenge barriers to gender equity Affirm students identities Foster leadership opportunities Advocate for social justice Build alliances across race, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, class, age, and abilities The Womens Center serves as the collective voice for those who share a commitment to issues concerning women.

Why A Womens Center?

The percentage of students who are women has been steadily increasing since the 1970s. Today, women students are the statistical majority; however, the social climate is slow in adjusting to this change. For example, in the job market, women typically earn less money than men doing the same job. Women are most likely to be the battered partner in violent relationships. Women are more likely than men to be faced with the dilemma of limiting their career opportunities to care for family. Women have more difficulty reaching upper levels of most professions. Women are less likely to be elected to public office; Pennsylvania has only one woman in the U.S. House of Representatives and no women in the U.S. Senate. SRU recognizes the need for ongoing advocacy and support for women if such discrepancies are to change.
