P109: Recognize a need or opportunity and take appropriate action

Once I turned sixteen, I was able to donate blood through the Red Cross. I donated my blood for the first time my unior year and from there on out it!s something that I will continue to do until I can!t anymore. "he first time I donated it was a huge #rocess leading u# to it because I originally ha$e $ery low iron, so a few days #rior to donating I was eating a lot of $egetables, green leafy foods, and drin%ing lots of water. "hen when I arri$ed to donate, I had a list of &uestions I had to go o$er before I could donate and after, I had my iron chec%ed and I #assed it with flying colors. 'fter I was done donating, com#letely, I felt really good about what I had done and %new that I would donate again when it was time. "he Red Cross $isits (ano$er)(orton (igh *chool three times a year and since my unior year I ha$e #artici#ated in e$ery blood dri$e and donated e$ery time. +$en o$er the summer of ,-./, I went to a blood dri$e #ut on through 'llegiance (ealth to ma%e sure I did my #art in 0P.-12 recognizing a need or opportunity and take appropriate action. "he Red Cross ex#resses all the time how they are $ery low in blood su##ly and that they are always in need of donors. I reali3ed that by gi$ing one #int of blood it can sa$e three li$es and that means a lot to me. Blood is a need for e$ery human body and as long as I stay healthy there is no reason I can!t donate. If I was in need of blood I ho#e there was someone out there that thought the same way because some don!t reali3e how im#ortant it is. Doing the right thing will not only benefit the #erson in need, but also the #erson doing the deed because it!s going to loo% good on them and reflect bac% on them as a #erson. *omething as little as gi$ing blood, that only ta%es a few minutes, will hel# me in the future when it comes to my career. I may ha$e someone on the o#erating table and while he or she is under anesthesia, they may go into a cardiac arrest. It is my ob, as a cardiologist, to try my hardest to re$i$e them and bring them bac% to life because they ha$e a family in the waiting room who wants another day, wee%, or e$en a cou#le of years with them. It!s my ob to reali3e the need of the #atient, who came and trusted me to o#erate and get them bac% to a healthy and ha##y lifestyle. Doing the right thing to me is trying to sa$e li$es and as a doctor I want to encourage #eo#le to donate blood because their blood could be %ee#ing my #atient ali$e.
