Jordan Romero-Sims Assignment 2 Criminology-

1a. The criminal that I selected the Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. 1b. Pablo Escobar falls under the organized crime category of criminality. 1c. Pablo Escobar is part of the organized crime category because the crimes that he committed were strategic and his overall goal was to make money and be in control. He also wanted to gain political power and was elected to congress in 1982. 2. Pablo Escobar was the leader of one of the most powerful criminal organizations ever assembled. He controlled about 80% of the cocaine that was transported into the United States. He ordered the assassinations of hundreds of people. Several of these target were high profile targets such as Supreme Court Justices and presidential candidates, He also ordered the murders of reporters and police officers. He controlled all the crime in Medellin after taking over Restrepos organization. 3a. In 1976 Escobar was charged of drug possession, he order the murder of the arresting officers and the charges were dropped. In 1986 he was arrested and on drug smuggling charges and racketeering, through the use of terror these charges were also dropped. Escobar made a deal with the Columbian government to stop all drug trafficking and to be jailed for a five year period. He also was permitted to build his own jail named La Catedral, which served five star food, drugs, alcohol and prostitute visitors. He escaped in 1992 and after a year of being on the run was shot in the head and killed on December 2, 1993. 3b. The informal punishments the Escobar received was minimal because Escobar was so powerful and many people looked up to him. He did have a family so being on the in prison and on the run brought some shame to the family. 4. The theory that applies most to Pablo Escobar is the social learning theory because Pablo learned his criminal behavior at a young age through socialization and communication. He grew up in a poor neighborhood and the goal of the people there is to make money any way they can even if it was illegal. He stole cars and smuggled coca paste when he was young and became a millionaire by the age of 22. When he saw that these crimes pay off he decided to expand his criminal activity.
