Hawkins American Government August 19, 2013 Political standings In the following, I would like to give several examples and reasons as why I think I am a Liberal. In todays American Society, we often have more than one view point. Theres societys opinion, and the personal view of individual. Although the power of this country comes from the government, the biggest part of this countrys decisions comes from the p ublic. The many different stand points one could take are based on purely on their beliefs. Based upon examination I am a liberal. I believe this country should focus solely on helping this land and its people, and providing for people who need providence. With the rules and views of society in todays government, a lot of things would be considered wrong to do or believe. For example, one could become quite disliked just by opposing gay marriage. I believe myself to be a liberal because I would oppose the opposition. As a liberal we think not just outside of the box but we put ourselves in a position to say, Why not. For example, one man could say he doesnt think same-sex marriage is fine, and why not. Where as a conservative thinker would just say yes its fine and with the rest of society. When I hear the word conservative, I think of conserving which is exactly what they do. Conserving means to keep fine, or protect, when I apply this to politics I think of afraid of change. I as a liberal am not only unafraid of change, but am all for it.

Change is an essential part of living and a way of life for not just humans but animals and technology as well. There are many things in politics that might make one liberal or conservative, for me it was just the idea that, I as an individual am not saying we need to change, but am definitely not opposing it. Liberals gave this country more opportunities and a chance as human to live better. For example, Abraham Lincoln saw that slavery wasnt necessarily the right thing for America, or its future generations so he set forth the emancipation proclamation. Liberals also gave this country an equal chance making blacks able to do so much more, i.e. become doctors, and lawyers. Because of the liberals this country is and has become a better place in my opinion for people to live, learn, and grow. Do not be misconceived; deep down I have some conservative opinions. Conservatives have given this country a lot of things to. After more than 1,000 years, we have still the greatest country to live in, thanks to conservatives. Conservatives, stand for how they think things should remain, and for more than 1,000 years some things have remained that way. After taking these past couple of surveys I learned not only am I liberal, but I feel this countrys society has far too big an effect on how people think. Most people find it wrong to think one way just because the next guy thinks the same as I stated before, about how conservatives, stay the same. When I hear liberal I hear liberty, and freedom of choice, and decision. Liberals are game changers. As our once great President John F. Kennedy said, If by liberally you mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people-their health,

their housing, their school, their jobs, their civil rights and their break throughThen Im proud to say Im a liberal. a man as wise and strong as JFK, only has the best interest as all liberals do. Being a liberal is more than just simply making a change. As JFK said, its about helping the lives of others around you. I like to at least help the people that ask for it. I feel like as a liberal I make some pretty good decisions when it comes to the public or people around me. With that being said, I dont feel like all liberals should rise to power, because there is always the big possibility that what one person might think is greater than what the other might think. A prime example of that is the topic at hand, Liberalism and conservatives. However there could just be one of the same thought with just two different ideas. Making a decision as whether or not one might be liberal or conservative takes just a bit of thought, and a clear conscious. To agree or disagree with one thing with too many things on your mind isnt necessarily wrong, but it is better and way easier to do. Apply this theory to school work; one cant focus on taking a test and passing if theyre worried about who won last nights game. Same applies to liberal thinking, one cant decide what they think is best if they feel they have the world as a burden to their opinion. However, Im not saying one should think carelessly, or without the rest of America to in mind, just state their thoughts and choose carefully. The actual idea of one being liberal or conservative is already based on opinion and ideas, but deeper than that, its about feelings. Throughout the course of history humanity has always FELT that they have made the greatest decision they possibly could have at that time. Whether that decision be based off of, knowledge, experience, or pure instinct it was the decision America has made and lived with. However no man is suitable to say, yes this is the

best thing to do. No man, but God himself, is able to make the BEST decisions for humanity and everyone just live with it. I feel like as a culture we should not only come together to make the decisions our future generations will have to live with and learn about, but make decisions we can live with and be proud of. Being a liberal also requires insight. America is the land of the free and what millions call home, but if we just were to let our minds be free we might see a good example of how others see things. One cannot just simply pick up on anothers train of thought, however one can, step in someone elses shoes for a moment. Ive done role play projects before and one thing Ive learned is that in the many ways that most people do things according to how they think. A free mind gives a clear conscious. As being a liberal I obviously think some of the things I choose are better, but I still recognize that what I believe is right is only my opinion. However opinionating ones thoughts and making the rest of the world observant is still a great thing. Giving insight and sharing is a gift, some people could b completely clueless as to what somethings even mean, and sharing how you feel about them and what you feel about them could help them. Although one could completely misinterpret you and feel you are one hundred percent wrong. I know being in a land of diversity we all have different feelings towards things, but while partaking in the activities of finding out whether or not I am a liberal, I learned how majority of people thing the same. I also learned how strongly people feel about things, and how much opinions can be valued. I dont see myself as a conservative because conservatives not only feel the need for a lack of change in society, but a lack of explanation for their thought. Im not saying that they dont give reasons as to why they feel a certain way, but weve all

heard the same things before. I feel things are the way they are now, because some people seek explanations. I feel that a liberal ideologist seeks change, better living, a future greater than the present and an all around better life. Always trying to move forward with new ideas only makes this world a better place. As Ive mentioned before the greatest example of progression I can think of is technology. About 20 years ago we didnt half of the things we take for granted today. Most people dont like technology as much as others; however it is undeniable that it has made our lives easier. Humans as a species are progressing far slower than technology. I believe that that fact stands because people want things to stay as they are. I am a liberal, because I feel its time that we change and look into the future for a better society.
