First Draft Discourse Community
One of the communities that I am involved in on campus is the animal science learning
community. This community is composed of freshmen who are majoring in animal science and
are taking core classes that everyone in the group must take as a freshman such as biology 110
and communications 114. With this community, you have the option to live in the same
residence hall with people in the community but it is completely optional. One of the rewards
that I was able to gain by joining this community was that I was able to meet new people that I
will be interacting with the rest of my college career. I also found that joining this community
allowed me to be able to work with a lot of these people sense we are taking the same classes.
One of the activities that was done in our group was creating study groups and review sessions
whenever we had an exam coming up. We were able to help each other with homework as well
as study for exams. After I joined this community I was able to create great relationships with
people and create friendships with people that I will see for the next four years. In order to join
the animal science learning community you have to be a freshman in animal science and you
have to fill out an application to considered. It is somewhat of a competitive community because
they will only take about 40 people.
Planning:
Week of 3/3: Conduct two interviews with Sophie Strong and Macy Swoveland
Q: Did you enjoy being a part of the ANSC LC?
Q: Would you encourage incoming freshman to join this community?
Q: What did you personally gain out of joining this community?
Week of 3/10: Conduct an interview with Dr. Mark Russell
Q: What made you want to become a leader for the ANSC LC?
Q: Why would recommend people to join this community?
Q: If you were a freshman, would you want to join the community?
Observations: Observe the behaviors of people in the learning community as well as observe the
qualities and characteristics we share in common.
6 Characteristics about the ANSC LC:
1. Our goals are to either apply to vet school or go into animal production
2. We all communicate with each other through weekly emails and newsletters
3. We participate in group activities like picnics, going to the zoo, volunteering at shelters
etc.
4. Im not really sure what our groups genre would be.
5. We use the same acronyms for classes like ANSC and AG and we also, instead of saying
cat, dog, and pig, we say feline, canine, and swine. So we have a lexis when it comes to
talking about animals.
6. In our group we dont really have experts sense we are all freshmen. Our learning
community leader is Dr. Russell who has a degree in animal science.
