Student Activities

The following questions are based on the Stage 5 Design and Technology syllabus.
Design process

1. What are the key skills that Alison Page needs when beginning to work with
Indigenous communities?
Alison has to have the skills of recognising the nature around the area that
she is working with. She has to get the clients to define their ideas. She may
also be asked to present the communities totem for example structuring a
feature in the shape of the indigenous communities totem. She needs to
learn about the community because the community tend to come up with
the ideas.

2. Identify the steps of the design process for the Wilcannia Project. What
kind of research did Alison need to undertake to complete the Wilcannia
Hospital project?
She has to keep in mind the Aboriginal notation of our physical
connection of the land. She has to take many photographs and has to pay
attention to detail.

3. Compare the design process used to design the Wilcannia Hospital
Project with that used by Ray Parslow and his team. Draw a flowchart for
each. What are the similarities and differences between the two processes?
Both processes include making sure that the people are happy with what
they are doing and they have to consider the culture of the indigenous
people.

4. Why should built environment designers consider the needs of the people
who will use the environments they create? For a built environment that you
have designed whose needs did you need to consider?
Because the clients and locals need to accept the area as it is a part of
their society.

Role of designers
1. Consultation, collaboration and teamwork are important to Alison
Page's design practice. Identify three specific examples of where this
has occurred.
An example of consultation is when Alison helps the indigenous
community in answering all there questions and problems in the Wilcannia
Hospital project, Alison uses collaboration with the community When
working with communities, Alison and her colleagues will help the
community to define their ideas. As well as working with a team Alison
involves everyone working in the project while answering and asking
questions to the community.

2. What kind of skills does a project manager have and why are these
skills important in Alison's line of work? You may like to use the Myfuture
web site http://www.myfuture.edu.au . Enter project manager as a
search term.
The kind of skills a project manager must have are being able to interpret
plans and estimate costs and quantities of materials needed, plan
construction methods and procedures, coordinate the supply of labor
and materials and to be a leader and in charge of everything. In Alison
line of work you must be prepared to build a new building from scratch
and have an understanding of the people you are working with.

3. List the different kinds of professionals and designers that might work on
a large building project.
In designing a large building project there are many people who
contribute and may be the designers, builders, plumbers, painters and
many other people who contribute to the building project.
A few people that contribute to the building project are:

1. Glenn Murcutt, and partner Wendy Lewin.
2. Susan Freeman, the Director of Freeman Ryan Design.
3. Circa Morris-Nun Walker.
4. Jackson Clements Burrows.
5. Dawson Brown.

4. Designers can make an important contribution to quality of life. In what
ways could the interior design of Alison Page help to make a user's life
easier or better?
To help make a users life easier Alison Page and her colleagues work
closely with local people and spend as much time with them to have
further ideas so she can construct buildings that are truly meaningful to
the people who use them. Alison may help the users of her interior
design by talking; observing and overlooking workshops and
community meetings, providing employment and training
opportunities. From this, the designers are able to make buildings that
are treasured, loved and valued by their communities, which is what
Alison Page did.

5. Discuss the training, study and work-related experiences of Alison Page.
Plan a possible pathway you could take to become an interior
designer. You may like to use the Myfuture web site
http://www.myfuture.edu.au . Enter interior designer or interior
architect as a search term.
Alison Pages training to study and work related experiences have all
linked to technology, architecture and interior designing. Alison has
studied completed and done courses throughout University and had done
her own practice as well. Alison met some designers and in specific, one
of them inspired her to look further and explore ways in which her identity
could be expressed through the design. Alison has inspired people to
follow in her ways in what she has done and accomplished. If I were to
become an interior designer, I would get experience and go to University
of Technology in Sydney and study and complete courses to extend my
knowledge about interior designing. Hopefully graduating and meeting a
number of people who inspire me for my career.
