Learning target:
Students will know what non-fiction text features are and how to use them.
Students will be able to find details in the text that answer their questions.
Students will be able to use illustrations/diagrams to clarify meanings or unfamiliar words.

Kid-friendly target:
I can read a non-fiction book and answer questions about it.
I can explain what some non-fiction text features are and how to use them.

Assessment Evidence
I will know students have met the target(s) if: they have answered their own questions after reading
Spiders and can explain the use of different non-fiction text features.

Opener/Introduction:
o I will introduce the book by asking about previous knowledge as well
as new learning that the students hope to come away with.
I have chosen this book today because it contains a lot of

Activity:
o Go over non-fiction text features. Students should be familiar with
these They include the contents, index, headings, labels, and
illustrations.
o Read the text.
Remind students to use the labels and illustrations to figure
out what new words mean (such as spinnerets and/or silk
glands as seen on page 5).

Closer:
o Direct students to the list of questions that they had before reading.
Work through them to see how many the book addressed. Answer
them using the books help.

Extension/Follow up lesson:
o If time, ask each student to tell me what the most interesting they
learned was and on what page they found it. Discuss different
items/features on the page.
o Could write the fact and draw a diagram with labels to share.
