Opening Set: Good morning students, we will start today by completing the bell ringer on the
board and discussing it as a class. Once we finish the bell ringer we will begin our notes for the
day. These notes will focus on how World War I became a total war, the effects that years of
warfare had on morale, the causes and effects of American entry into the war, and what events
led to the end of the war. After the notes are finished and the classroom discussion is completed,
then the students will complete learning task number five. The instructions for this activity can
be found under Learning Tasks in this lesson plan. Ask the students if they have any questions
about todays plan, if there are no questions, begin the lesson.
Learning Tasks (Procedures):
1. The students will complete a bell ringer covering material from the previous lesson. This
is done to check learning.
2. Students will take notes describing how World War I was a total war and how years at
war effects the morale of a soldier. They will do this by taking notes as the teacher goes
through the power points and through classroom discussion.
3. The students will watch short videos on the sinking of the Lusitania and how the sinking
of this passenger ship affected the United States stance on World War I.
4. The students will discuss this video in their groups and give THEIR opinion on if the
United State were supplying the British with weapon while they were neutral in the war.
A classroom discussion will follow the group discussion
5. In their groups the students will suppose that they are living in the United States during
1917. They should write a letter explaining whether or not the United States should enter
the war. The students should refer to the Zimmerman Note on page 470 of their book and
Germanys decision to resume unrestricted submarine warfare to help them write this
letter. This is a group activity and only one letter is required from each group. This is an
informal assessment.
Assessment/Evaluation: Walk the room and listen to discussion on the material covered. Ask
the students questions about the material covered and the videos. Discuss the power points and
notes with the class. Learning task number five will be taken up at the end of class and reviewed
by the teacher. This is an informal assessment, but the assignment needs to be checked to ensure
learning has occurred.
Closure: Last five minutes of class, review what was covered in the lesson and ask the students
questions about the material. If the students do not have any questions, preview what will be
covered in tomorrows lesson. When the bell rings tell the students to have a great day and thank
them for their attentiveness.
Intervention: Struggling learners will be provided with the materials needed to succeed in the
classroom. If there is a struggling writer, notes will be provided and when it comes time for
group work, peer mentors will be assigned to help the student with his/her work.
