Term Paper Reflection
This project was close to home for me. I chose to write about the lack of Sex Education
among the Latino community in the United States. I am a father of two girls, though they are
only 4 & 3 years old, I am very concerned of their future and the challenges that await them.
Through the studies of this class I have been able to demonstrate substantive knowledge of the
historical, political, cultural, and social experiences of the Mexican Americans living in the
United States(learning outcome #1). Specifically with this paper I demonstrated the social aspect
and tied it to a potential solution in helping to resolve the problem of the lack of sex education
among the culture by utilizing social media websites.
The second learning outcome that I demonstrated was interpreting information
represented in data, graphs, tables, statistics, and research studies to more effectively understand
individual and group patterns of behavior amongst the Mexican American communities(learning
outcome #3). I was able to locate information provided by the government on the website for the
center of disease control and prevention. Using the data provided, I was able to use it to show the
lack of sex education that exists amongst the youth, especially the Mexican Americans. The data
collected showed the lack of education to say no to sex and the lack of birth control instruction.
Additionally, I was able to find and explain the high rates of non-contraceptive use amongst the
Mexican American teens.
The final learning outcome demonstrated in my term paper was the use of key aspects of
critical thinking through the use of identifying applicable culturally acceptable interpersonal
skills when working with Mexican Americans. I was able to come up with 3 potential solutions
to help address the problem at hand. The first was teach the parents how to talk to their children
about sex. This would be done by a certified licensed teacher at Parent Teacher Conferences. In
addition, I started a social media page on Facebook to show how to get in contact and discuss
issues with Mexican American youth. Finally, I proposed that we install condom vending
machines in high school locker rooms. The question no longer is how to prevent it, because it is
happening. The question is how to prevent teen pregnancy, and the transmission of STDs.
