5 Year Plan
During my Junior year, my parents kept telling me that I needed to start thinking about
my future and decide what I want to be. I always knew that I wanted to go to college. It was
hardwired into my brain that the quickest way to become successful was to get a good education
and therefore getting a good job. The only problem was that I didnt know what to be. All I knew
was that I wanted to help people and make a significant impact in their lives.
In the next 5 years, my goal is to become a Family Nurse Practitioner in the Army.
Ultimately, I plan on becoming a pediatrician, but that isnt for another four to six years. I plan to
take Nursing at Fresno State University for the next 4 years under the ROTC program and then
commission into the Army National Guard upon graduation. The ROTC program stands for
Reserve Officer Training Corps. That means that when I graduate, Ill be a 2nd Lieutenant and
will have to serve the Army or the Army National Guard for a minimum of 8 years. However, I
can choose to be in the Inactive Ready Reserve where I can pursue my medical degree while
accompanying the Army National Guard on missions such as Hurricane Katrina and 9/11 to help
the people in such disasters.
I have been offered a scholarship to attend Fresno State, however, Im still waiting on the
acceptance of my appeals for admission. Regardless of whatever school I attend, I plan on taking
all of the prerequisites for Nursing for the first two years, and also some ROTC courses that are
required to be in the program. The prerequisites for Nursing include Oral Communication,
English Composition, Critical Thinking, Statistics, Intro to Chemistry, Human Anatomy, Human
Physiology, and Microbiology. After accomplishing my prerequisites, I hope to be accepted into
the Nursing program and take various Nursing courses.
A short term goal of mine is to be more involved in school like joining clubs, and doing
more volunteer work. Im also striving to maintain a 4.0 GPA throughout my undergraduate
education. Doing these things will help my application for medical school look more appealing
and also help me grow as a person.
While Im attending Fresno State, I plan on living with my relatives rather than spending
an extra $11,000 on room and board. The scholarship that I might be receiving gives a monthly
stipend of $300, so I wont have to experience the frugal life that most college students will have
to live. However, I still plan to have a part time job while Im in college just so that I can have
money.
In 5 years, I like to imagine myself in a hospital on base helping military families stay
healthy and strong and also helping other people in my country who have been badly affected by
future disasters. It is very important to me that I achieve my goals, because its what Ive always
wanted. I know that all it takes is hard work and dedication and Im willing to do everything it
takes to reach my goals.
