Grade and Topic: 1 st Grade Science Length of Lesson: 53 mins for 2 days Mentor Teacher: Joey Weaver School: University of Memphis IDT 3600
UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA: This lesson plan is a part of Science focusing on the life cycle of living things
LESSON OBJECTIVE: Given primary and secondary resources, students will identify characteristics of the insect with 100% accuracy. Given primary and secondary resources, students will identify the four stages of complete metamorphosis with 100% accuracy. Given primary and secondary resources, students will sequence the four stages of complete metamorphosis with 100% accuracy.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED: GLE 0107.4.1 Observe and illustrate the life cycle of animals. Observe, describe, and record the life cycle of a particular animal. http://www.tn.gov/education/ci/sci/doc/SCI_Grade_1.pdf 3. Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. http://www.state.tn.us/education/ci/sci/doc/SCI_Grade_K.pdf
MATERIALS: The Very Hungry Caterpillar video with projector and screen Computer with Internet explorer and Microsoft Office Printer and Ink Childrens Encyclopedias Magazines Printed Pictures and words Technology Integration
With this lesson, students will interact with technology by using the computer. Students will research the topic using the links provided. The students will select and move items to their correct destination using Microsoft word.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE: Introduction: To open the lesson the will display the video The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. After viewing the video I will review what the student remembered about the story. 6 minutes Procedures: Pre assessment will occur to see if the student has any prior knowledge about metamorphosis of animals and insects. 5 minutes Inform the student about the misuse of the word cocoon that is used in the story and explain the correct name Chrysalis 2 minutes I will divide the class into two groups, the first group will research using the internet and the second group will research using encyclopedias and periodicals. 20 minutes After 20 mins the groups will switch resources. Having both resources will help the students narrow down important information that is needed. 20 minutes For students who struggle with the lesson, there will be magazines and pictures that are already sorted and need to be cut out. Those students will match those pictures with the correct word. This will show that the characteristics can be identified without having to do research. The information gained should be printed and/or written down to proceed with part two of the lesson. Day 2 Student will be in the computer lab so that they all can complete the assignment. Given a worksheet, students will use the information they gathered to complete the activity. 30 minutes With the assistance of the teachers, each student will print the completed activity and turn it to the teacher. 8 minutes
Closure: Students will return to the class and have a discussion about what they learned and how the video/book differed from what they researched. I will then inform the students about the next lesson, which will be on the life cycle of the frog. 15 minutes
ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE: I will formatively asses the students by asking questions about the stages of the butterfly, observing them during the lesson and working hands on to assist them. Summative assessment will include a short answer/ matching test that will be given at the end of the week. Student will also get a chance to play an interactive sequencing game to familiarize them with the lesson. Make sure there is a clear link between the Goals and Objectives and the Assessments.
MODIFICATIONS: Those who have not mastered the concept will be allowed an extra day to familiarize themselves with the lesson. Homework will be provided with the assignment. Enrichment activities will include a short story that the student will write in his/her journal. The story should describe how the student used resources to find out about the metamorphosis of the butterfly. Each stage should be described correctly using paragraph form.
