Q1)

a) Write the formula for calculating the design lateral forces?
b) Define the following terms (i) Maximum considerable earthquake (ii) Average response
acceleration coefficient
c) Write in brief about the Response Reduction factor.
d) What are the various factors affecting the Ductility?
e) Differentiate between Rigid diaphragms and Flexible diaphragms.
f) What do you understand by the terms: critical damped. underdamped and overdamped system.
g) Illustrate lessons learnt from the past earthquakes in few words.
h) What is Dynamic magnification factor? Give expression also.
i) Give criteria for minimum thickness of shear wall as suggested by the IS
13920 : 1993.
j) What is moment resisting frame?

Q2. Explain in brief causes of earthquakes and damaging effects on buildings?

Q3.What is Seismic spectrum? Explain response spectra.

Q4. A mass of 100 kg is supported on springs of total stiffness of 784N/mm. The machine produces an
unbalanced disturbing force of 392N at a speed 50c/s. Assuming a damping factor of 0.2,
determine(i)The amplitude of motion due to unbalance (ii)The transmissibility.
