Artifact Reflection
Title of Experience/Artifact: Physical Activity Tracking Consumer Report
Date Experience Completed: May 1
st
, 2014

Describe your educational experience/artifact:

The Physical Activity Tracking Consumer Report was a group activity of 5 members. We had to
choose a tracking device (Mio Heart Rate Monitor) and research what the device was all about
and reflect on it if we would use it in a classroom setting. We researched the pros and cons to the
Mio heart rate monitor and presented it to the class through a short film and power point
presentation as well. The video also featured how to use the device properly and give possible
future users a general understanding of what the product can do.

Standard Alignment

Content Standard NHES, NASPE, or ACSM

NASPE - Standard 2 - The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts,
principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.

The standard matches, because in order to create the artifact and present our information
we had to be knowledgeable about what type of movements are incorporated with using the Mio
Heart Rate monitor. It was essential to know the parts of the watch and what it does so we could
tell the students what activities the device could track.

Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment

I believe this artifact best aligns with Standard 1- Content: Teachers know the subjects
they are teaching. The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures
of the disciplines she or he teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects
of subject matter meaningful for pupils.
This artifact aligns with Standard 1, because in order to correctly present our information
and cover all of the criteria we had to do a lot of research on our product. We had to learn the ins
and outs of the Mio Heart Rate Monitor to be prepared to answer any questions that the
class/professor had. The artifact demonstrates competency in the designated standard, because in
order to relay meaningful information to the class I had to understand everything about the
device so my classmates could be educated about it. My group and I did our research that
covered the criteria my teacher wanted and we knew enough about the device to provide out
class with the necessary information.

UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skills, Dispositions Alignment

I believe this artifact best aligns with KS3.c. ENGAGES STUDENTS IN LEARNING:
The candidate has the ability to engage students in the learning process by linking appropriate
content, based upon suitable instructional materials and resources, to students' knowledge and
experience, being certain that all students are cognitively engaged in the activities/assignments
and that the students actively contribute to the content design. Instruction is highly coherent and
appropriately paced for all students and allows for reflection and closure as appropriate.
This artifact aligns with the designated KSD, because we had four different materials
within the assignment that encouraged learning. As a group we knew ahead of time that our
classmates had some knowledge about tracking devices so we were able to reiterate some points
that had already been made in class by other students. Also the fact that we were transitioning
from a short movie to a power point to a document to a questionnaire helped keep our classmates
engaged in the information we were presenting. The artifact demonstrates competency in the
KSD, because our classmates learned more about the product we presented and they were able to
give us feedback about whether they would use it or not, which shows they understood the
content being discussed.

Explain what you learned about teaching/learning from this experience:

The specifics I learned about regarding the KSD and Standard I chose were how important it is
to be fully prepared when presenting information to a class. Especially when it is a new concept
to the students, you want to make sure that you are relaying all of the important information to
the students so they can benefit from the activity, or in this case a product. Also if I know the
topic I am teaching well I will be able to keep the students engaged more in learning.

Explain what you learned about yourself as a prospective educator as a result of this
experience/artifact:

What I learned about myself is that being as thorough as possible when teaching a lesson is
essential when introducing new material. Also I realized it is important to now bombard the
students with too much new information the first day. In the artifact we kept things pretty
straightforward and also repeated information as well, which enhances the students opportunities
to learn.
