Standard NE (Nebraska) Standards

Students will be successfully fulfilling the NE standards of Science for grades 6-8 by
selecting and using equipment appropriate to the investigation and demonstrating the
correct techniques (appropriate through students choosing proper chemical materials,
demonstrating lab safety within the experiment, etc) Recording and representing data
appropriately and review for quality, accuracy, and relevancy (applicable for student
observation sheet)as well as sharing information, procedures, results, and conclusions
with appropriate audiences (Student presentation portion as well as the IMovie
presentation in general)

NETS (National Educational Technology Standards).

Students will also be successfully meeting the National Education Technology Standards.
This lesson plan encourages students to demonstrate Creativity and Innovation through
enhancing their knowledge about basic chemical reactions, while creating an original
IMovie project as a means of personal expression. Students are also meeting the
Communication and Collaboration component of the standard through working
collaboratively within groups for the entirety of the process, and proceeding to
communicate their final project to their fellow peers during the final presentation portion
of the assignment. Moving forward, students are demonstrating Research and
Information Fluency by evaluating the experiment process sheet and researching as to
why Diet Coke and Mentos fuse when combined. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving,
and Decision Making is also crucial to this particular standard. Students will be meeting
this component by appropriately planning and making decisions about their IMovie
project before they finish manipulating their clips into a final project. The 5
th
step of Nets
is Digital Citizenship and the latter portion of this project in its entirety envelops this
concept for it is pivotal for students to be safe, responsible, and appropriate with the
privilege of using their cameras, laptops, and IMovie. Finally, the students are
understanding and using technological systems throughout the majority of the lesson,
which successfully incorporates the sixth and final step of Nets, Technology Operations
and Concepts. There is no denying that this particular standard is incredibly elaborate,
but the students are without a doubt accomplishing one aspect or another of the standard,
which will prove to be quite beneficial in the long run for students involvement with not
only this lesson, but with technology in general.
Introduction This particular lesson introduces the concept of chemical reactions and allows the
students to put the reaction to the test. Students will be able to broaden their conceptual
knowledge on the chemicals at play within the experiment, while also having the
opportunity to exemplify lab safety rules when demonstrating the reaction. Furthermore,
students will be blossoming their creative and technological skills through the use of
IMovie.
Technology
Uses/Materials
Needed
Students will need the materials that are required for the Diet Coke Vs. Mentos
experiment. As suggested in the title of the experiment, students will only need one, two-
liter bottle of Diet Coke, a roll of Mentos mints, and a pair of Lab Safety Goggles.
Students will also need a digital camera or a cellular device with video-taping capabilities
to film the entirety of the experiment. Students are required as well to fill out the
Experiment Observation Sheet that will be given out prior to the experiment.
Following the experiment itself, students will need a laptop or computer to access IMovie
and YouTube in order to properly complete this assignment.
Objectives Objective 1: Properly Complete Diet Coke Vs. Mentos Experiment
Objective 2: Utilization of Technology
Objective 3: Application of relevant chemical-reaction-related concepts
Objective 4: Broaden students knowledge on chemical reactions
Objective 5: Usage of creative skills using IMovie

Preparing the
Student
In order to prepare the student for the lesson, students will need to understand the basic
chemical terms for the experiment, know how to safely conduct the assessment, as well
as how to successfully use their camera and IMovie to edit the footage of the experiment.
The students will also have to comprehend the lesson objective in order to understand the
assignment as a whole.
Assessment of
Student
Learning
CREATE: Students are creating scientific experiments, along with a final IMovie piece
in order to develop their creative skills.

EVALUATE: Students will evaluate the results of the experiment and measure whether
or not the experiment was a success.

ANALYZE: Students will calculate how much of each required material they will need,
and explain the results of their experiment through their IMovie presentation.

APPLY: Students will apply the results from the experiment to their IMovie, in order to
illustrate their experiences.

UNDERSTAND: Students must summarize their results on the given material sheet, as
well as demonstrate their understanding of the assignment through their experiment and
IMovie.

REMEMBER: Students will need to record and examine their experiment results on the
given sheet, as well as be able to recognize the necessary chemical-reaction concepts.

Lesson
Sequence
1) Introduction to Science students will be enhancing their knowledge on basic chemical
reaction concepts through an interactive experience, alongside the IOS application,
IMovie.
2) Students will be separated into groups of 3 and will be working collaboratively
throughout the entirety of the lesson.
3) Each group will receive an Experiment Run-Through Sheet and Experiment
Evaluation Sheet that will help to guide them through this particular activity.
4) Once students have read through the Run-Through sheet and are given a basic
instruction on how the day will go, students will grab the appropriate materials and head
outside to conduct the experiment.
5) Each group member will have a particular task that they will be expected to complete
throughout the first portion of the lesson. One student will be conducting the experiment,
one student will be filming, and the other will be recording the results.
6) Once students have completed the procedure and recorded the results, they will be led
back inside to conduct the latter half of the lesson.
7) Students will open the application, IMovie on their computers and proceed to plug
in and import their video into the application itself by selecting File, then Import
Movies.
8) While their experiment footage is uploading into IMovie, students are to find a
Youtube video explaining why the Diet Coke vs. Mentos experiment occurs.
(Recommended searches include: Diet Coke Vs. Mentos Phenomenon, Mythbusting
Diet Coke Vs. Mentos Experiment, etc)
9) Once students have found a video that they feel is appropriate for their creation, they
will download the video through KeepVid.com. This is a very simple instruction
process and students should be able to download the video fairly instantly.
10) As students import this video into their IMovie library as well, they may begin
manipulating the footage to their liking. Encourage students to use as much creativity as
possible with the many effects, texts, musical options, transitions, etc that the program
has to offer.
11) Students are given fairly free reign as to how their final projects will result, but are
required to include clips from their selected video from YouTube, the entirety of their
experiment film, alongside a final text slide that explaining why the chemical reaction
occurs.
12) Once students have met this requirement and they feel as though they are satisfied
with their final products, students are to export the video by selecting Share, followed
by Export Using Quicktime.
13) The exporting process can take a fair share of time depending on how long and
detailed their IMovie product is, therefore, it is important to encourage students to remain
patient.
14) Once the projects are successfully exported, students will place their projects on the
class flash drive.
15) The presentation process will then begin where the entire Introduction to Science
class will be able to view their fellow peers experiment results and creative project.

Measurement
of Success
Success within this project will be measured on the students ability to create a creative,
well-informed IMovie, while also demonstrating a basic comprehension of the chemical,
scientific terms and reactions at play. Students are required to fill out their experiment
observation sheet that will be graded on the basis of thorough completion. When it comes
to the final IMovie product, there is no set limit as to how creative the student can be and
they are encouraged to create as unique of a project as possible. So long as students have
included their YouTube clip, footage from the experiment, and result slidethey have
met the basic requirement. Students are expected to follow instruction to the upmost
degree and will be measured on how well they utilize their time and class and make use
of the resources and materials provided. Metacognition is put into effect into this lesson
plan because students will be thinking about thinking how they will configure their
footage into an innovative video presentation, as well as which YouTube video they feel
will be most pertinent to their final project. This lesson can positively be administered
with future lessons for students can continue to advance their chemical-reaction
knowledge and continue to perform more complex scientific experiments. Of course,
students can continue to input their results into IMovie and continue to broaden their
library of fun experiments they conducted throughout the semester. It would even be
possible to have an Intro to Science: Oscars Edition where students can select which of
their films is their favorite and can show it to the class. The class can then vote on their
favorites based on content and overall creativity. IMovie offers such a vast variety of fun
ways to interact with the program and can make any amateur movie-maker feel at ease,
which will allow students to feel very comfortable with not only this lesson, but future
manipulations of the lesson as well.
