investigations to determine the effects of mixing substances
together.
0 Performance Standard The students will plan and conduct
investigations to describe and classify different kinds of
materials by their observable properties and record their

Investigations - Planning and carrying out investigations to answer
questions or test solutions to problems in K2 builds on prior
experiences and progresses to simple investigations, based on fair tests,
which provide data to support explanations or design solutions.
0 Plan and conduct an investigation collaboratively to produce data to
serve as the basis for evidence to answer a question. (2-PS1-1)
0 Disciplinary Core Idea: PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter
0 Different kinds of matter exist and many of them can be either solid or
liquid, depending on temperature. Matter can be described and
classified by its observable properties. (2-PS1-1)
0 Crosscutting Concepts - Patterns
0 Patterns in the natural and human designed world can be observed. (2-

Introduction
The purpose of this project is to see if the powder
substances react the same when mixed with liquids at
room temperature and liquids that were refrigerated
for three hours.
Problem
Will the cold temperature of the liquids hinder any
possible reaction when the substances are mixed?
Hypothesis
I think that the cold temperature of the liquids will
hinder any possible reactions when the substances are
mixed.
Materials Needed
0 6 Foil pie pans
0 Teaspoon
0 Tablespoon
0 24 little plastic cups
0 Yeast
0 Salt
0 Sugar
0 Baby powder
0 Bisquick
0 Flour
0 Lemon Juice
0 Vinegar
0 Hydrogen Peroxide
0 Olive Oil
Procedure
0 Lay out 6 pie pans
0 Place 4 cups in each pan
0 Put 1 teaspoon of the same powder in the cups of the same pie
pan.
0 Place 1 tablespoon of one of the liquids; i.e. place 1 tablespoon of
the olive oil in one of the cups in each pan.
0 Watch for 5 minutes.
0 Record any observations during this 5 minutes.
0 Repeat these steps for the remaining three liquids.
0 Repeat these steps again for all with cold liquids.
0 Record any observations for the cold liquids during this 5
minutes.
Variables

0 The same powders will be used in trial one and trial
two.
0 The liquids in the first trial will be at room
temperature.
0 The liquids in the second trial will be cold. They will
have been in the refrigerator for three hours.
Data Collected
0 At room temperature 16 of the powders reacted with
the liquids.
0 At room temperature 8 of the powders did not react
with the liquids.
0 2 of the substances had a slower reaction with the
cold liquids.
0 22 of the substances did not have a slower reaction
with the cold liquids, or had no reaction at all.

Results

0 The cold liquids did have an affect on 2 of the
substances. The reactions were the same but a little
slower and did not last as long.
0 The cold liquids did not have any different affect on
the substances where there was little or no reaction.
Conclusion
I conclude that my hypothesis was correct for 2 of the
substances. These were the substances where there
was a substantial reaction when the powder and liquids
were mixed. The yeast and the flour had the greatest
reaction with mixed with the hydrogen peroxide at
room temperature and when it was cold out of the
refrigerator. The substances that really did not react or
simply turned pasty were not affected by the cold
temperature of the liquids. The reaction and time was
still the same.
Research Report
Before I began this project I knew that yeast and hydrogen
peroxide produced a foam when they were mixed together. I have
mixed them together before at room temperature. I have not have
any experience mixing any of the other substances together.

I want to know if the other substances will react with the hydrogen
peroxide and the other liquids. I want to know if there is a
difference in the type of reaction if the liquids are cold when mixed
with the powders.
