1. Time can be shown graphically on calendars and timelines

Classroom Setting:
This lesson will be taught in front of the entire class. There are 24 students in the
class from many different ethnic and social backgrounds. There are 3 students who are
classified as being ELLs, 2 students who are in the gifted range according to MAP testing
scores, 1 student on an IEP for learning disability, and the rest of the students fall within
the middle of the bell curve range for learning. The school district is considered to be
middle upper class where the students receive support at home with schoolwork and
resources, which they can use. The some races represented in the classroom are Hispanic,
Middle Eastern, Asian and African American race.
It will be differentiated for the 3 levels of students with in the classroom through a
variety of supports and challenges given verbally. Students are allowed to work to their
specific learning style, albeit singing the song out loud, moving ot the months of the year,
placing htem in different styles or also, working with a partner.
The physical environment is very welcoming for the students. It has a Hollywood theme
with the students being called Stars and the classroom jobs having the same titles as if they
were on a movie set. This, however, does not distract them from the lessons or provide an
overarching theme for the school year. The desks, which are more like full tables with desks
underneath for storage, are placed perpendicularly to the board in 3 rows, where each child can
easily see the board. There is a large carpet space in the front of the room by the board where the
main ideas of the day are taught before students are sent back to their desks for individual work.
The kidney shaped table is used for individual conferencing with students as well as an
organizational area for the teacher.

Expected duration:
Our lesson is scheduled to last from 20 to 30 minutes. It is a continuation lesson
from the work the students have been doing on months and seasons earlier in the week.
The lesson will be continued with follow-up on Thursday and Friday.
The lesson duration is limited by the short period of time allotted during the day for
Social Studies. The students have 45 minutes for the subject but the first 15 minutes are
spent reviewing Common Core concepts and a short assessment to show mastery of skills
on their report cards for that quarter.
The final 30 minutes are spent with group instruction on the carpet and then the
students going back to their seats for group or individual work.

Detailed Procedure:
1. First we will introduce the lesson and refer back to a book read earlier in the day
or the week regarding Months and seasons. We will recall the seasons we
learned. We will teach the students a short song with the order of the months of
the year. During this time, the students will be seated on the carpet.
2. Then we will distribute the materials and cut out the months for the pre-
assessment of the students knowledge. The students will return to their desks
and complete the assignment there. They will work individually putting together
a time line of the months of the year. While the students are working, the
teacher will be walking around checking to make sure they are working and
placing the months in the correct order.
3. The students will sing the song as they are placing the months in order. When
the students are finished, we will allow them to place the months on a timeline at
the front of the room. They do not need to be correct at this point.
4. As we review the months in the correct order at the front of the room, the
students glue their months down.
5. We will cover the months and a few key holidays as they sing the song once
again and are reminded of what the order and ordinals are for the months of the
year.

Assessment:
Informal: We will check the students work as they are placing the months in order
and mentally not which students need an additional hand or would need another round of
review on the months and the order.
Formal: We will collect the students work and make sure they have the months in
the correct order and can orally sing the song when singing together.

Follow-up:
The teacher will do a review worksheet the next day and review the song as they
wrap up social studies and finish with timelines and calendars. The students will also be
given quizzes periodically to make sure they are meeting the standards and grasping the
concepts for when they will take the OAAs in the fall of third grade.
