UDL Lesson Plan 1 SPED 245

English Language Arts: All about Me Book
CC Standard - RL.6.7Compare and contrast the experience of reading a story, drama, or poem
to listening to or viewing an audio, video, or live version of the text, including contrasting what
they "see" and "hear" when reading the text to what they perceive when they listen or watch.

Behavioral Objective: Students will use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the life as
presented in one of two texts; the story More than anything else by Marie Bandby, and the
history of Booker-T Washington; to identify the differences and similarities they have in
common with the characters in the story life style to the modern life present today. Based on the
two texts, students will describe how important is freedom and education is to them.

Procedure:

Activating Prior Knowledge: Teacher will remind students about last weeks lesson on
creating their profile for their all about me Memory book. Teacher will give five minutes for
students who didnt get a chance to finish their profiles. Moreover, student will add their photos
also taken last week to paste to their profile sheets. Teacher will also give a Facebook current
statue sheet, where students will briefly express the felling, and mood they are currently in to
add to their version of a Facebook all about me memory book. The Facebook current statue
sheet also consists of the focus question of the day which is If there is anything you can have in
this world what would it be? And why? Student will answer the question, and then have a group
discussion, sharing everyones thoughts on the question.

Teacher will hand out a guided checklist to each student, as a content of each assignment at
hand in this lesson. The teacher will first read aloud a story called More Than Anything Else
by Marie Bandby. Students also have the option of reading the story through text to speech
power point. Using the read aloud and text to speech strategy to give clear understanding of the
story.

Modeling: Teacher will model how to use a Venn Diagram; using a brief biography of
Booker T. Washington to compare and contrast five facts his life to the teachers modern life in
the present time. This will visually show students how the Venn Diagram should be completed.

Guided Practices: After listening to the brief summary of Booker T. Washington, students will
work collaboratively to formulate their own Venn Diagram. Using both texts, More than
anything else & History of Booker T. Washington, student will write five facts identify the
similarities and differences they have in common with the character Booker. Once this is
completed they will place this assignment in their all about me memory book.

Independent Practice: Students will independent answer the comprehension question. After
reading More than anything else and The History of Booker T. Washington, how essential is
your freedom and education to you? Explain in one paragraph or more. You may use details
from the story to support your answer.

Assessment: The teacher will observe students using the graphic organizer tool to
collaboratively work together; assessing proper completion of five compared and contrasted facts
of the students modern life the character in the story. The teacher will also collect the Venn
diagram and independent practice comprehension questions to evaluate students responses.

Multiple means of representation:
3.3 Option that guide information processing- First option, the teacher use a graphic organizer:
Venn Diagram and biography of Booker T, Washington so students can create the Venn diagram.
Second option, the actual story book More than anything else great amount of illustrations
5.1 Option in the media for communication- the teacher use alternative media to provided
physical manipulative (books, worksheets) and had the same assignments computer based.

Multiple mean of engagement:
5.1 Options in the media for communication-Teacher used power point presentation with speech
to text to provide other options to illustrate the story More Than anything else. Moreover,
teacher used IPad to have to illustrate Biography on Booker T. Washington.
6.4 Options the enhance capacity for monitoring process- Before assignments, the teacher will
provide each student with a checklist giving students guides to the task that needs to be
completed, and they can monitor their work.

Multiple means of expression:
7.3 Options that recruits interest- The teacher vary the level of novelty to capture students
attention. Student have the option of hearing More than anything else through read aloud, text
to speech power point, or individual read. Making optional different instructional environments
for student s to choose whatever makes them comfortable to work and gain interest of the
assignment.
8.3 Options that fosters collaboration and communication- student will collaboratively work
together during the guided practice activity formulating their own Venn diagram. The
distribution of mentoring through peers can greatly increase the opportunities of one-on-one
support.
