1. The sentences that expresses the narrators tone are stated when John says it is forbidden to cross the
great river and look upon the place that was the Place of the Godsthis is most strictly forbidden. We
do not even say its name though we know its name. It is here the reader understands how compliant
John is to his peoples rules and their values through his accepting tone of voice.

2. The Dead Places are remote and lifeless civilizations that require a massive amount of breath-holding
to withstand thre decay and rotting strucutres that reside inside. The sacredness and mag ical feeling
the place encoporates will have an effect on John.
