Battle of Honey Springs Lesson Plan

LESSON TITLE: The Battle of Honey Springs.

UNIT TITLE: Oklahoma History
GRADE LEVEL: 9
th
12
th
TIME ALLOTED: 50 minutes.
UNIT LEARNING GOAL (unit to which this lesson relates): The goal for this unit is to
cover the scope of Oklahoma history completely and thoroughly, including any battles,
historic decisions, legislations, etc.
SPECIFIC LESSON OBJECTIVES (*Classroom Management Domain #1--
Preparation):
What do you want your students to know and be able to do after instruction?
After instruction, students should be able to display knowledge of the Battle of
Honey Springs, and its impact on the Civil War.
INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN (Classroom Management Domain #1 & #4, Preparation
& Lesson Planning)
1. Introduction/Set Induction/Hook
Describe how you will interest and involve your students so that they are
motivated to learn.
As the class enters the room, divide them into heterogeneous groups of 4-5
people. After the groups are formed, play a game of Civil War Jeopardy, where questions
are targeted to test the knowledge the students have gained as a result of lessons taught
previously (15 minutes).

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES (*Instructional Effectiveness Domain #10-13
Explains Content, Explains Directions, Models, & Monitors)
(Describe here what the teacher and students will actually DO as they engage in
learning.)

Students will be using the interactive website designed by Shane Farris and Travis Sloat
to navigate the circumstances of the Battle of Honey Springs, a pivotal battle in the Civil
War which gave the Union Army a leg up in the war. The website contains facts and
information from cited sources, as well as multimedia presentations which engage
multiple learning styles. Students should include a section of their presentations that
sympathizes with an alternate viewpoint from their own race. For instance, a white
student would need to try to identify what it would be like for an African American
soldier or Native American soldier in the war.

CLOSURE/SUMMARY (*Instructional Effectiveness Domain #15Establishes
Closure)

Students will be given the links to additional resources found on the website, which they
will study, then combine with the information theyve been taught, and write a three page
report over the Battle of Honey Springs and how it helped the Union Army in the Civil
War. Students should cite sources in the research paper.

RESOURCES AND MATERIALS (including technology)

A video screen and projector
Computer
Speakers
Materials for a research project

SUPPLEMENTARY / ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES (Optional)

As a supplementary activity, students should do an image search for pictures from the
Civil War, including the Battle of Honey Springs, and create a PowerPoint or Prezi
presentation with them to present to their classmates, much in the same way the website
was created. With cited information and creative presentation, this could be a more
visually appealing way to do a research paper.
