Communicating and Collaborating: A Course Reflection
Prompt 1). The role of the arts in humanities to me, are pieces of time a particular time. I think only a
moment is captured through that. The things that I still question in a sense are that why is there more
questions about what we humans do than there are answers? For example war, Why War? Why send off
a whole bunch of troops rather than trying to do whatever you can to come to a compromise without
having to hurt the innocent? Another was when we were discussing the theme on Identity, Privilege and
Inequality and we talked about discrimination against the disabled. I know that there is still
discrimination out there but why not touch on the top of ageism? I think that is a growing problem for
discrimination as well.
Prompt 2). Where I developed most of my critical thinking skills and also my creative thinking skills
would be in the classroom from the class lectures and from the homework and texts we needed to read.
For examples the critical thinking was more developed from the journals where we needed to write
down our thoughts. The critical responses for each theme played a big role as well where we needed to
respond to a text, a video/film, and a poem that we read. A lot of the texts really made me think more in
depth about things, I would read something and when I was finished I would think Hey I did not think of
it that way. The creative thinking skills came from having to work in groups because you get ideas from
listening to others opinions. You see their side and also my collaborative skills were developed with
groups as well. I also learned creative skills from the spirituality and sacredness theme. There are so
many religions and sacred places out in the world that I learned about and became more open minded.
The war theme that we touched on was very helpful for my final group project. War is a topic that goes
very deep and in depth, there is so much to cover and my group decided to touch on the war in
Vietnam. There is so much information on Vietnam and we wanted to focus more on the soldiers side of
the war as well as the side from the civilians in the middle of the war at the time. My advice for future
students wanting to take this course would be that this will not be an easy class but if you keep on task
and keep up with all of your assignments then there should be no reason for the student not to get a
good grade. Do not get discouraged by the amount of work for the course, if you keep on task then it
will not seem like a lot to do. Have fun with the class; do not see it as a course that was a requirement
for you to take. This is a really fun and a good course to take.
Response to Communicating and Collaborating-
The connections that I have between taking the Intro to Humanities course and my other courses would
be a big connection and most of my classes were similar in the topics that we discussed. For example the
theme on identity had a lot to do with human communication. Getting that interaction from different
people as well. In most of my classes I had to do an interview with someone, it was different topics but I
still needed to have that interaction. I had to go into depth with answering questions regarding critical
thinking. What I learned from my other courses that I was able to apply and enhance in this course were
learning about a diverse set of topics. I was able to think critically about the texts that I needed to read,
and make a connection with the person that was telling the story. Seeing their side of things. All of my
classes made some sort of connection with each other.
