The Battle of Saratoga is an important turning point in the Revolutionary War. The Battle of Saratoga led to the French aiding the Colonists, which later led to victory.

Stage 2- Assessment Evidence Performance Tasks: What tasks will students be able to do to demonstrate understanding? Students will be able to construct an informative essay describing the events and details from the Battle of Saratoga. Students will use knowledge from the Social Studies lesson to construct their ideas in an orderly, coherent fashion, providing detail and factual information.
Other Evidence: What other things can students do to show what they know? Students may include key ideas from the discussion, videos, and other topics that were learned in the Social Studies lesson within their essay. Students will also complete a short formative assessment at a later time to refresh their ideas about the topic. Self-Assessments: What ways can students check understandings to set future goals? Students may check for understanding by evaluating their own writing and peer-editing work.
Reflections: What did you identify during self-evaluation? This lesson will be brief, as students will go directly from the social studies lesson into the informative writing task. Students will be encouraged to brainstorm ideas before writing and to finalize their writing with revisions and peer editing.
Stage 3 Learning Plan

1. Students will be given directions about the informative essay that they are to construct. a. 5 paragraph essay i. Introduction ii. Battle of Saratoga summary with details. facts, key figures iii. Treaty of Alliance, explain importance iv. Turning point of the war, explain why v. Conclusions, summarize ideas from essay 2. Students will use a graphic organize to construct main ideas for essay. Students may work with partners to brainstorm and discuss the important details for the essay. 3. Students will construct a rough draft (double spaced) in their writing journal 4. Students will use our proof reading and editing checklists to revise their own work and to peer edit with at least one classmate. 5. Students will complete the assignment by copying their essay onto final draft paper after teacher approval 6. Students will complete assignment as homework if incomplete by end of day
