March/April 2014
The time is quickly approaching for our students in 3rd,
4th, and 5th grades to take the End of Grade Test.
During the final weeks of the school year, your child will
take the state-required multiple-choice North Carolina End-
of-Grade tests in Reading and Math. Fifth graders will also
take a Science EOG test. Scores on the tests are among the
many ways to find out how well your child is doing in school.
Test scores are considered along with all other available aca-
demic information that the school has. Students who score a
level 3, 4, or 5 are considered to be on grade level. More in-
formation will be coming home within the next few weeks to
explain the new achievement levels.
Many parents ask How can I help my child? There are a
number of ways that you can help. The Counselors Corner
on page 4 lists some of those ways.

Autism Awareness Continued
April in Art class. Our K-2 clas-
ses watched the video Arthur

our 3-5 students watched Intro

each student created a puzzle
piece to incorporate into our

our school have had questions
about their classmates. Autism
now affects 1 in 68 children
and boys are nearly five times
more likely than girls to have
autism. Autism varies greatly
from person to person; no two
people with autism are
alike. This year we began
autism lessons for each
classroom during the month of
feedback and response from
our Stories Creek Gators! They
were excited to see their hard
work and collaboration come
together to form the giant rib-
bon. Allowing children the op-
portunity to ask questions and
explaining autism in language
they understand is imperative
to creating an open environ-
ment where everyone is ac-
cepted!

It is just about time for testing again.
The schedule for testing is
Regular EOGs
May 30th Science (5th grade)
June 4th Reading
June 5th Math
Here are some tips to help make sure your chil-
dren are ready to do their best on the tests.
Get a good nights sleep the night before.
Let your children know that the tests are
important and that it is important that they
do their best but that they do not need to
be anxious about testing.
Make sure they have a good breakfast
the morning before testing (either at
school or at home).
On time attendance on testing days is ex-
tremely important!

The third, fourth and fifth graders did a great
job in the spring program! Great job to all those
that had a speaking part or performed on instru-
ments. You are to be commended for a wonder-
ful performance! Fourth and fifth graders are
now practicing their recorder playing skills each
week in music class. Fifth grade parents: Don't
miss your child singing in their promotion cere-
mony, which is June 11th! Kindergarten par-
ents: there will be a short performance on May
9th at 1:30pm. All kindergarten parents are wel-
come to attend! Second and third graders are
learning all about instruments of the orchestra,
and first grade has been busy learning how to
read music! Thanks to the PTSO for their sup-
port for the music program and to all the par-
ents who have attended their child's perfor-
mance! Best Regards, Mrs. Helgevold
Music Notes
Mrs. Casteel's class partnered with the Roxboro Ro-
tary Club and collected over 800 books to send to
Arena Primary School in Tigray, Ethiopia. The books
will help them create an English Language Learning
Center library at their school. Currently the school
does not have access to updated, age-appropriate
books, and our school's donations will help their stu-
dents get a higher quality education.

Gators Don't Quit, We Get FIT!
As the school year draws to a conclusion and
teachers and students ramp up for EOG's, it is im-
portant to remember the importance of staying physi-
cally active. Studies show that regular physical activi-
ty increases one's physical, mental, social, behavior-
al, and spiritual self. At Stories Creek, we encourage
students to participate in a variety of sports, games,
and activities; both leisurely and competitively. En-
couraging and participating alongside your child can
make the experience all the more pleasurable!
Our students completed their spring fitness test-
ing, as required for all 3-5 students. Fitness tests in-
clude a series of measurements that help determine
the health status and physical fitness of an individual.
They are designed to measure a students strength,
flexibility, endurance, and body composition, all of
which students have learned about throughout the
course of the school year. Parents should be pleased
to know that students demonstrated tremendous
growth in this series of four tests: V-Sit and Reach,
Push Ups, Sit-Ups, and the Mile Run. I am so proud
of their dedication and commitment!
Continue to praise and encourage your child for
their commitment to progress, not just in the class-
room, but in life! GO GATORS!

5th Grade Trip to Jamestown
men and boys to sleep. After
we got off the ships we went to
the English settlement. We
went to the Mayors house.
The doctor lived with him. Also,
we went inside the church
where they prayed to the Lord
and talked about the Virginia
Company. Then, we were
shown how to use a musket
and we were shown some of
the tools they used to make
In Jamestown we learned a
lot of stuff about the Powhatan
Indians and the English settle-
ment. First, my class was tak-
en to the Indian homes which
were called Yehakins. Our
guide, Emily, told my class that
the Yehakins were made out of
thin reeds, tied together by ani-
mal tendons. Also, we learned
how they hunted and cooked
their food.
Next, we were taken to see
the Susan Constant, the God-
speed, and the Discovery
ships. These were the ships
the English sailed to the new
world on. Our guide told us
that there were one hundred
forty-four men on the ship and
it took one hundred forty-four
days to get to Jamestown. The
ships had little space for the
their homes. Last, we went to
the museum. We learned
about Indians, Africans, and
even what it was like to live in
England. This was a fun and
exciting field trip. We learned a
lot of fun facts about Indians
and the English.
