ACEI 3.4 Active engagement in learning- Candidates understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior among students at the K-6 level to foster active engagement in learning, self motivation, and positive social interaction and to create supportive learning environments.
Semester: Spring 2014 Date: April 23, 2013
1. Description of exemplar and how it demonstrates meeting this ACEI Standard and Element(s).
During my field placement at Waikiki Elementary School, I created this lesson to go along with the concept of doubling that our 2 nd grade classroom was learning about currently in the unit. I came up with the concept of a Doubling Book based on a prior experience with burnishing I had in art class I once took. My lesson incorporated this art of burnishing in order to create a duplicate copy, or a double, of an object drawn with a pencil.
This exemplar demonstrates the standard elements by fostering active engagement in learning, self-motivation, and positive social interaction and creating supportive learning environments in the form of creating a magic doubling book. Having students learn hands on helped keep them engaged in learning. Students were actively engage because they were allowed to choose shapes or pictures to draw. The act of burnishing also kept them engaged because they were excited to see if it would work and if it did, what exactly would happen. They would burnish and they would unfold their paper with excitement.
2. Reflection on my professional growth in knowledge, skills, and dispositions related to this ACEI Standard and Element(s).
My professional growth in knowledge in skills came at the ending of my lesson. My students were excited about their doubling books and excited to be doubling numbers. It was then I knew that I was not only able to engage my students in the lesson, but also have them excited about math. So I gained knowledge of my students and what it takes to keep them engaged in learning.
I also gained the skill of preparation and organization. When creating this lesson, I felt this would be a way to engage my students in the concept of math and more specifically doubling. I created a pre-folded template in which students could fill out their information and easily burnish a double to practice the skill of doubling. Once the lesson was completed, I collected the books and assembled them and later passed them out. I did it this way because I wanted the students to be focused on the doubling aspect and not book-making.
A disposition I gained from this lesson included communication. My communication skills needed to be sharp and precise to guide my students through the steps of this lesson and also to keep them on task. I made it a point to communicate clearly as to what was being asked of them.
Teacher: Mr. (Donovan) Martinez Title of Lesson: Magic Doubling Book Grade Level: 2 Time: 45 minutes. 11:30a-12:15p Special Student Considerations: NA Before Class: Have agenda, supplies, written on the board. Standards & Benchmarks: Common Core- 2.OA.3 Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.
Introductio n & Session Instructions
Introductions & Greeting: (2 min) 11:30- 11:32a - Greet students and note that they are working on addition and exploring different ways to add. - Remind students about their behavior during the last lesson, Lets improve on that and stay on task.
Session Instructions: - Students will have necessary supplies (i.e. pencil, eraser) on desk. - Select a number from each table to retreive a sheet of paper (Magic Doubling Book) - Write rules on the board: (1. Stay seated quietly; 2. Listen carefully, follow directions; 3. Raise your hand; 4. Respect each other.)
Mini- Lesson & Create Connect and cite one example (from previous class/knowledge): 3. Now that we have practiced adding single digit numbers we will explore the concept of doubling.
Say what youre going to teach: (2 min) 11:32- 11:34a - Today we will making a creating a Magic Doubling Book. You will learn the concept of doubling single numbers from 1-5. The concept of doubling will help strengthen your knowledge of basic math facts as well as prepare you for multiplication.
Teach: - Meaning of Doubling. What is the meaning of doubling?
Active Engagement: (5 min) 11:34- 11:39a - Students will recall first impression of myself. I want you to think back to my first day here in this class. What was I wearing? What were the first thoughts that came to your mind?
Create: (26 min) 11:35a- 12:05p - 1) - 2) - 3) - 4) Your Magic Doubling Book should have: ~Your name ~Title ~Two (2) burnished examples of a number from 1-5 doubled ~Each drawing must be labeled with proper number ~Two (2) number sentences representing each doubling example.
