Gangs and Our Community, Difference?

Gangs, are they destructive to our communities or are they the community? Many
people could argue that gangs are destructive and violent; I can argue that they are not. Gangs
can have a positive effect on communities because gangs are just social organizations, they
form protection, and they have their social benefits. Gangs also did not create and do not
commit crimes. The individuals in the gang commit the crimes. (Walsh).
What is a gang? A gang is considered a group of three or more people with a name or
symbol to represent themselves who also commit crimes. If you take out the portion about
committing crimes you have average schools, towns, states, teams, families, and even the
government. The government could be considered a gang minus the criminal activity, but that is
a different argument. (National Institute of Justice).
People would argue that gangs only commit crimes. Its the individuals inside the gang
that commit the crimes not the gang itself. If a student at a high school shoplifted from Wal-mart
would you blame the high school? We can not blame a group of people for doing wrong if only
a few kids did the crime. (Walsh).
The reason people start or joining a gang is for social benefits. Gangs provide places to
sleep, food to eat, and family pride. The law and other concerned bystanders believe gangs
and all gangs are violent and a tribulation to society. The fact of the matter is that gangs can be
positive and affect the community positively. (Walsh).
Gangs provide protection for their "family" if one gets in a difficult situation they will not let
him or her go through it alone. Family is meant serious for gangs. Family in general is a gang,
for example my last name as well as my father and my mother is Hiles were a group of three
people and our family symbol is our family crest if you have one or not your symbol could also
be your last name. We all could be considered to be in a gang according to the definition the
government has created. (Walsh)
The government believe it or not is a gang. They have symbols in all different areas of the
whole government they have branches different members and different symbols. The
government are just a group of different gangs who try to run the world. The exact thing the
government tries to destroy is the government itself.
In conclusion gangs are not negative on the community. Gangs have many benefits to
everyone. They give troubled kids and kids who don't have families a chance to be in one. The
criminal activities are not based on the gang, but on the individuals in the gang. Next time you
think of a gang think about what a "gang" is. Don't think what youre told think what you believe.

Student 2, your paper has the potential to be the most interesting well thought out paper in all
four of my English classes. Set a study hall or two aside to finish this up so I can read all of
your thoughts.
