Hello! My name is Ms. Girard. I am so fortunate to be teaching at West Elementary! I graduated in May from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. I student taught last year at this school and have fallen in love with West already. My hobbies include flower and vegetable gardening, wakeboarding and antiquing. Upcoming Events Classroom Open House Tuesday, September 6, 7:30 P.M. Ice Cream Social with the Faculty Friday, September 9, 5 P.M. School Assembly This week's school assembly is on storybook characters. Children may dress up like a character on Thursday. (You might want to bring a change of clothes for the rest of the day.) Costumes can be as simple as a hat or a small picture of your character pinned to your shirt. Have fun!

Supply List Reading: We will begin our Guided Reading groups this week. Remember that these groups are flexible, and students move up in levels at the speed that is most effective for them. We will take a Scholastic Reading Inventory test to determine reading level. Watch for the Guided Reading books to start coming home. These should be read by the student on the night they come home and sent back to school the next day. We will set expectations for guided reading time. Language Arts: Our skills focus this week will be identifying character traits, recognizing key details, and use of punctuation in text. We will also be working on expectations for literacy time. Math: We will begin Unit 1 of Investigations Math this week. Were establishing math time expectations, exploring math tools, learning to use a number line; reviewing the +, -, =, <, and > symbols; using a hundred chart; and working on telling time to the nearest hour. Science: We will be learning about gravity, push and pull, and simple machines like lever and inclined plane. Social Studies: This week we will be focusing on promoting the common good in different communities. We will also be learning how to solve a dispute peacefully to maintain peace in our community.
