RULES AND GUIDELINES
1.0 Introduction
Choral Speaking is a competition organized by the Ministry of Education. The
competition aims at encouraging and increasing the use of English among
pupils or students. It builds confidence in pupils or students to memorize,
speak, render and express themseles in English.

!." Eligibility
!."." This competition is diided into ! categories#
primary school
secondary school

!.".! This competition is open to pupils of goernment$aided schools from
Y#&r ' to Y#&r ( only. %ear & pupils are allo'ed to participate if they
are from under enrolled schools.
!.".& This competition is open to all students of goernment$aided schools
from For! 1 to For! ) only.
!.".( Each Choral Speaking team comprises members from the %&!#
school.
!.! Time
!.!." )or the primary school category, each team is gien a presentation
time limit of ) to * minutes. Marks 'ill be deducted thereafter.
!.!.! )or the secondary school category, each team is gien a presentation
time limit of * to 10 minutes. Marks 'ill be deducted thereafter.
!.& Team
!.&." Each team should comprise +0 to +) pupils or students. * conductor
should be appointed amongst these pupils or students.
!.&.! Each team should be accompanied by ( teachers$in$charge.
!.( Text
!.(." Selection of texts may be in the form of poetry or short prose. Texts
should "r#,#r&-$. be original and authentic.
!.(.! *dapted texts including those from preious years should be
ackno'ledged by citing the source.
!.(.& +articipants are not allo'ed to refer to any notes or printed materials
during the presentation.
!.(.( Materials presented must not touch on sensitie issues, such as race,
religion, stereotyping, politics etc.
!.(., Copies of choral speaking texts must be submitted to the organisers
t/o /##0% prior to the competition.

!.,." *ll participants should be in school uniform 'hen competing.
!.,.! The conductor may use gloes.
!.- Exclusions
!.-." There should be no inclusion of music, drama, costume, props or
artificial sound effects.
!.-.! *ny inclusion of singing, skit or physical moement should enhance
and not dominate the presentation.
!.. Stage *rrangement
!..." The arrangement of the teams on the stage 'ill be in fixed &$tiered
ro's.
!./ 0udges
!./." 1ational leel competitions should be 2udged by , or . 2udges.
!./.! The 3est Conductor should be 2udged by a %#"&r&t# panel of & 2udges.
!./.& The 2udges 'ill be appointed by the 4iision of Co$curriculum and *rts,
Ministry of Education.
!.5 4ecisions

!.5." +oints 'ill be a'arded according to the score sheet.
!.5.! 0udges 'ill collectiely determine the placing by a clear ma2ority ote.
!.5.& The decision of the 2udges is final.
!.5.( Indiidual team marks 'ill not be disclosed.
!."6 +rizes
!."6." +la7ues and certificates of achieement 'ill be a'arded to the 'inning
teams.
!."6.! Certificates of participation 'ill be a'arded to all participating teams.

The 'inning teams from the preious year may participate in the current year
but the text and presentation must not be an exact replica.
This concept paper is alid until further notification or reision from the
Ministry of Education and can be used at all leels for competitions organized
by the Ministry.
D#,inition
8Choral Speaking is the interpretation of poetry or prose by a group, comprising
anything from half a dozen to a hundred speakers. It inoles a full and aried use of
the indiidual oices that make up the group. There may be diisions of the 'hole
group into light and dark oices, broken and unbroken, male and female, treble and
so on. Indiidual oices may be used as solo.9
