Wisconsin's Model Academic Standards for Science
Physical Properties of
Matter
v !"!
NETs Standard(s)
Gina L! Eder
Modified from: Maggie Yamnitz
Objectives (teaching targets):
Students will be able to explain matter" mass" volume" and
physical properties!
Students will be able to give examples of objects with matter!
Students will be able to describe the three states of matter!
Students will compare physical properties of matter!
Students will learn to record observations using a data table!
3. Research and information fluency
Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use
information.
a. Plan strategies to guide inquiry
b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and
ethically use information from a variety of sources and
media
c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools
based on the appropriateness to specific tasks
d. Process data and report results
4. Critical thinking, problem solving,
and decision making
Students use critical thinking skills to plan
and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems,
and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools
and resources.
1. Identify and define authentic problems and
significant questions for investigation
2. Plan and manage activities to develop a
solution or complete a project
3. Collect and analyze data to identify solutions
and/or make informed decisions
4. Use multiple processes and diverse
perspectives to explore alternative solutions

Science, Standard D: Physical Science
Performance Standards - Grade 4
By the end of grade four, students will:
PROPERTIES OF EARTH MATERIALS
D.4.1 Understand that objects are made of more than one substance, by observing, describing and measuring the properties
of earth materials, including properties of size, weight, shape, color, temperature, and the ability to react with other substances
D.4.2 Group and/or classify objects and substances based on the properties of earth materials
D.4.3. Understand that substances can exist in different states-solid, liquid, gas
Science, Standard C: Science Inquiry
Performance Standards - Grade 4
By the end of grade four, students will:
C.4.1 Use the vocabulary of the unifying themes to ask questions about objects, organisms, and events being studied
C.4.2 Use the science content being learned to ask questions, plan investigations, make observations, make predictions, and
offer explanations
C.4.3 Select multiple sources of information to help answer questions selected for classroom investigations
C.4.5 Use data they have collected to develop explanations and answer questions generated by investigations
C.4.6 Communicate the results of their investigations in ways their audiences will understand by using charts, graphs,
drawings, written descriptions, and various other means, to display their answers
C.4.7 Support their conclusions with logical arguments
C.4.8 Ask additional questions that might help focus or further an investigation

Physical Properties of Matter
#rd grade
Lesson Notes:
Learning Activities:
Students interact with the Smartboard by moving objects and writing! There will also be
demonstrations to further explain the concepts! We will have group investigations while learning
how to record data on a data table! At the end" students will participate in individual investigations
and group observed data recordings!
Assessment: (What to do want your students to know and be able to do? How will you know?
Students will identify objects with matter in the classroom!
Students will identify the definitions of matter" mass" volume" and physical properties!
Students will identify physical properties of matter in individual and group investigations!
Students will learn to observe and record data individually and as a group!

What is mass?
Mass is the amount of matter
something contains. The more
matter something has, the greater
the mass is.

What is a Physical Property?
Anything you can observe about
an object by using your senses.
April 30, 2014
What are the 5 senses?
Sight-
Sound-
Smell-
Taste-
Touch-
What we see- Size, Color, Shape, if it Smears, if it Clumps...
What we hear- when Dropped, Tapped, Shaken...
Odor- Sour, Sweet, Smells like...
But not in this investigation!!! Sour, Sweet, Bitter, Salty,
Tastes like...
What we feel- Smooth, Rough, Hard, Soft, Heavy, Light, Cold,
Hot, Bumpy, Thick, Runny...

A physical property
is
one that can be measured or observed with
the senses without changing the matter into
another kind of matter.

of a popsicle?
What do you see?
What do you feel?
What do you smell?
