Introduction
The purpose of this project was to give us a
better understanding of surface areas and nets. We
were also able to review multiplying fractions and
decimals, ratios, proportions, and scale factors. We
would be able to understand where the length, width,
and height would go on the net for this project. This
would help us remember how to find the surface
area better. We had to multiply fractions and
decimals to find the surface areas, volumes, and
dimensions and nets of the new boxes. We made the
enlarged and reduced boxes rational proportional by
using scale factors.

Page 1
Procedure
Step 1: Get a box.
Step 2: Draw a 3-D shape of the box. Then, find the height, length, width, volume,
and surface area of the original box. Label the dimensions on the 3-D shape. To
find the volume, we multiplied the dimensions, 19.2 cm (height), 12.3 cm (length),
and 4.4 cm (width), to get the volume 1,039.104 cm .
Step 3: We drew the net of the original box in our notebooks, and labeled the dimensions on it.
Then, we multiplied the length and width of each box and added the products together to get the
surface area. There were 2 boxes with the lengths and widths 12.3 cm and 19.2 cm, 2 boxes with
the lengths and widths 12.3 cm and 4.4 cm, and 2 boxes with the lengths
and widths 19.2 cm and 4.4 cm. If you add all of the products together,
472.32 cm, 108.24 cm, and 168.96 cm, the surface area is 749.52 cm .
Step 4: Enlarge and reduce the size of the box. In order to enlarge the box, we multiplied the
original dimensions by a number more than 1, 1.5. The new dimensions became 28.8 cm
(height), 18.45 cm (length), and 6.6 cm (width). We reduced the box by
multiplying the original dimensionsby a number less than 1, 0.75. The new
dimensions became 14.4 cm (height), 9.225 cm (length), and 3.3 cm (width).
Step 5: Find the volume of the enlarged and reduced boxes. We found the volumes by
multiplying the length, width, and height of the boxes. For the enlarged box, we multiplied its
dimensions, 28.8 cm (height), 18.45 cm (length), and 6.6 cm (width), to get the
volume, 3,506.976 cm . We found the volume of the reduced box by
multiplying its dimensions, 14.4 cm (height), 9.225 cm (length), and 3.3 cm
(width), and got 438.372 cm .
Step 6: Draw the nets and find the scale factors of the enlarged and reduced boxes. We drew
bigger and smaller nets of the original box in our notebooks. After labeling the dimensions on
the net, we multiplied the lengths and widths of each box. Then, we added up all of the products
to get the surface area. For the enlarged box, there were 2 boxes with the lengths and widths
18.45 cm and 28.8 cm, 2 boxes with the lengths and widths 18.45 cm and 6.6 cm, and 2 boxes
with the lengths and widths 28.8 cm and 6.6 cm. If you add up all of the products, 1,062.72 cm,
243.54 cm, and 380.16 cm, the surface area of the enlarged box is 1,686.42 cm . For the
reduced box, there were 2 boxes with the lengths and widths 9.225 cm and 14.4 cm, 2 boxes with
the lengths and widths 9.225 cm and 3.3 cm, and 2 boxes with the lengths and widths 14.4 cm
and 3.3 cm. We added the products, 265.68 cm, 60.885 cm, and 95.04 cm to get the surface area,
421.605 cm .
Step 7: Make the blue print of the scaled boxes on the poster. We drew the nets of the enlarged
and reduced boxes and then cut them out. After that, we drew the design on the boxes.

Analysis
I have observed from the ratios that to check your work for
the ratios in terms of volume, you multiply the numerators and
the denominators of the unit rates to the 3
rd
power. For the
ratios in terms of surface area, you multiply the numerators and
the denominators of the unit rates to the 2
nd
power. I also
observed that the unit rate of the reduced to enlarged ratio for
the volume, 1/8, is half of the unit rate of the reduced to
enlarged ratio for the surface area, 1/4. This is because the
number that was used to reduce the original boxs dimensions,
0.75, is half of the number that was used to enlarge the original
boxs dimensions, 1.5.
