World Dance Research Project

Name: ___________________________________________

Country: ___________________________________________

Directions: As a group, students will conduct a research project on dance in a specific country.
This project will be broken into two parts: 1. A power point on dance in the country. 2. A
performance in the dance tradition.

Power Point Presentation (75 pts.)

Create a Power Point presentation on dance in a specific country. Make sure the presentation
includes the following information:
The types of dance traditions that have developed in the country (If there are many types
of dance, narrow the scope and focus on three or less traditions that really showcase the
country.)
For each type of dance tradition think about the following questions:
o How did this dance type develop?
o Is the dance different today than it was in the past? If yes, why did it change?
o Do people still perform this type of dance today?
o Is music an important part of this dance tradition?
o What is the cultural impact of this dance tradition?
A history and/or timeline of significant events/people/movements within the different
types of dances.
Include important choreographers and/or dancers who helped shape these dance traditions,
and some background information about them.
Technique: Is there a specific technique or multiple types of technique found in these
dance traditions? What are some elements of this technique that are always found in the
these dance traditions?
A short video that showcases one or more dance traditions from the country.

Power Point Requirements:
Should be at least 10 slides or more (15 max).
Be sure to include visual aids (pictures, video, graphic design, transitions, etc.)
Must include a Bibliography with MLA citation.

Oral Presentation Requirements:
Presentation should be at least 5 minutes long (not including the video).
Everyone in the group must present.
The slides are just there for general information. DO NOT READ THE SLIDES!

World Dance Performance (75 pts.)

After researching a countries traditional dance forms, students will create a choreography based
on one of the dance traditions.

Performance Requirements:
Dances should be at least 1.5 minutes long.
Music should be appropriate to the country of origin.
Choreographic elements should be applied- time, space, energy.
Dances should not be exact copies of dances found in the dance tradition, but rather
abstractions of the techniques you have researched.
Everyone must contribute to the choreography.
Costumes are not required, but are highly recommended, especially if the genre calls for a
certain costume.

Teaching Requirements:
Be prepared to share with the class a short combination from your choreography.

Have fun, research hard, and explore the movement to the fullest!
