Solo/Duet Choreography Assignment

All dancers have the awesome opportunity to choreograph a solo for third term! It will be a wonderful
chance to show us who you are as a dancer. It will be worth half of your third term gradeSTART NOW!
The focus of this assignment is to develop your creativity by creating new combinations, interesting
perspectives, and unique interpretations. You will have the chance to explore using various inspirations such as
poetry, emotions, pictures, props, sounds, etc.

Solo Requirements:
1. Complete a labeled floor pattern. A floor pattern is an overall visual component of a dancers
traveling pattern. Your floor pattern should include up stage, down stage, stage right, and stage left,
as well as major movements within your choreography. If dancing a duet, each dancers travel
pattern should be in a different color.

2. Use all three major choreographic elements:
i. TIME- Change of tempo/ rhythm.
ii. SPACE- Change of levels, facing, and use of performance space.
iii. ENERGY- Use of movement qualities: Sustained, Swing, Vibratory, Percussive,
Collapse, Suspend.

3. Each solo/duet will need to turn in a paper explaining their inspiration and how their choreography
relates to the inspiration. This paper should be 1-2 pages long and TYPED. Include an example of
your inspiration if possible. Sources of inspiration may include EVENTS, STORIES, POEMS,
WRITINGS, PICTURES, SHAPES/TEXTURES, EMOTIONS, PROPS, GESTURES, ETC.

4. Time requirements: Dance 3 (Adv.) = 1:45 - 2:00. Points will be deducted if the time requirement is
not met.

5. CHOOSE YOUR MUSIC WISELY! Please remember that music should complement your
choreography and not over shadow. Music that is popular and on the radio should not be used. There
will be a music check-off before mid-terms showings. TAKE TIME TO CHOOSE YOUR MUSIC!

6. Dance clothing is required (leotard, tights, jazz pants, dance top). You may want to wear costumes to
enhance your choreography, but it is not required. NO SWEATS, T-SHIRTS, OR BAGGY
CLOTHING!

7. There will be a mid-term check-off for the piece. You should have at least a minutes worth of
choreography to show, and be ready to explain your inspiration for the piece.

8. The final showing of your dance will be in front of the class. Evaluations will completed by every
individual student, and then averaged into the final score. At the time of the final showing, you must
turn in your completed floor pattern and inspiration paper.

REMEMBER! No class time will be given to work on this project, so make sure you stay on top of things. Also,
if you choose not to complete this assignment, you will be ineligible to perform in the final concert and your
grade will be adversely affected. So go forth, be inspired, have fun, and make it your own!
