Ensemble/Class: What is Music? Central Focus: Introductory Lesson
Materials Needed: Syllabus/Smartboard with Internet Access/PowerPoint/Spotify
Objectives Standards Musical 1 Students will receive and review the syllabus 2 Students will begin to watch Mr. Jareds presentation (PowerPoint that features the remaining objectives) 3 Students will answer the question, What is Music? using their own definition Musical National Standards 1 Listening to, analyzing, and describing music 2 Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts 3 Understanding music in relation to history and culture Academic Language 4 Students will take a few moments to brainstorm ideas about their favorite songs, albums, bands, genres, etc 5 Students will merge into small groups of 3, and discuss their favorite songs, albums, bands, genre, etc 6 Students will write their first journal entry at the end of class and will be due next class Common Core 4 Responding to and analyzing works of art 5 Understanding the cultural contributions of the Arts

T introduces himself, and briefly goes over the syllabus 4. T asks if S has any questions, and instructs them to separate the last page and sign it to hand in for the next class

Presentation 2 1. After the syllabus is reviewed, T dims lights and begins PowerPoint presentation 2. (The Presentation contains slides with information about the remaining class objectives, and about the app that students will use frequently, Spotify) Informal Assessment What is Music?
3 1. In the first slide, T will talk a little bit more about himself 2. The second slide will literally say, What is Music? and T will ask each S to stand up, introduce themselves, and say what they think music is Formal Assessment Brainstorm 4 1. After S have given their small introductions, T will proceed in the PowerPoint until reaching a slide about brainstorming musical ideas 2. T will then ask S to take a few minutes to write down some musical information like their favorite: songs, albums, bands, genres, etc Informal Assessment Groups 5 1. T will then instruct S to form groups of 3 with the closest students around them 2. T asks S to share what they wrote down with the students in their group Informal Assessment Journal Assignment 6 1. T will tell S to return to their seats, and proceeds in the PowerPoint presentation 2. T explains and reminds S about the Journal Assignments that are part of the class (first introduced in syllabus) 3. T informs S that their topic for todays assignment is to write down what music means to them, and something they would like to learn about before the year is over 4. T asks S to get started now, and that their assignment is due at the beginning of next class Informal Assessment. Journal assignment due Wednesday
