Artifact Reflection

University of Wisconsin-Platteville
Title of Experience/Artifact: Warrior Dash Outline
Date Experience Completed: April 25, 2014
Description:
The artifact I have presented is an outline I had to draw of the obstacle course for the students to see
what kind of obstacles they would be engaging in for the event. The course was a mile long course filled
with a variety of fun obstacle stations the students had to complete to move onto the next obstacle.
The course started out with the students running up a hill to a downhill slip and slide. The rest of the
course consisted of crab walks, army crawls, sprints, jumping through hula-hoops, bunny hopping with
potato sacs, crawling over BOSU balls, medicine ball races, wheel barrow races, jumping over and under
hurdles, balance beams, jumping jacks, water guns, jumping a stack of hay bales, and finishing with
running through volunteers hitting them with football dummies and running all the way their school
stairs to the finish line.
UW-Platteville Health Promotion Standard Alignment
This experience best aligns with the Health Promotion Standard 2, Collaboration. The health promoter
fosters relationships with professional colleagues, clients and agencies in the larger community to
support client learning and well-being. I think this best aligns with Collaboration because the whole
process of putting this entire event together was interacting and communicating with other colleagues
and clients in a large community. Besides the artifact I have presented of the outline of the obstacle
course, there was a lot more that was put into this event. My co-organizers and I put together a pep
rally and boot camps to prepare and teach the students about the Warrior Dash, as well as their overall
well-being. Having boot camps helped them realize that they cant just jump into a big event like this
and expect to be in shape for it.
Health and Physical Educations Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment
KSD2.b. Establishes a Culture for Learning, The candidate can create an environment that establishes
and maintains high expectations for all clients to value content of course work, take pride in work by
initiating improvements, and help peers. I think my artifact best aligns with this ksd because I feel I
created an healthy, active environment for the students, initiated improvements with the boot camps
involved, and helped with my peers in creating the entire event.
What you learned about teaching/learning from this experience:
With this experience, I learned how to work with many colleagues, how to put an event together, and
teach students about how to prepare for such an experience. I learned with this experience as with
others that not every child (client) is at the same level of physical activity and that each one needs
motivation to continue through the boot camps and obstacle course and not feel embarrassed no
matter if they got first place or last place.
What you learned about yourself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience/artifact:
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator is that I can work well with other co-organizers,
with students, and how to educate the students about physical activity in a fun manner. This experience
has also taught me to be patient with organizing events like this and that everything needs to be
perfected in a certain way before the even can actually happen. I learned how to give and gain respect
for the people who were a part of my team and wanted to put together such a wonderful, active
experience for a large group of students who were also willing to be there every step of the way.
