Objective: We are assessing students knowledge of how to apply problem solving strategies. Audience: Peers Product: Students will fill in a graphic organiser in class that includes generating possible solutions. They will take personal action in order to address problems. Inquiry Into:

Q u e s t i o n s What is peace? What is conflict? How can perspectives cause conflict/peace? Why do people argue? What factors can affect our emotions and actions? What strategies can we use to resolve conflict? How can we continue to promote peace? Possible learning experiences these may take place in individual subject time, or within the Unit of Inquiry Literacy: Reading During these first few weeks we are assessing students reading skills to ascertain their individual reading levels. This allows us to structure our reading programme according to the needs of each student and ensures that students are reading books at the appropriate level. Home readers will be sent home as soon as this process is complete. Library: Listening to stories which promote peace, how to create a peaceful environment in the library e.g. quiet voices, sharing books, taking turns checking out books Literacy: Writing Students will be exposed to the following text types in their writing: Recounts: Journals and reflections Narrative writing: Poetry peace/sense poems Expositions: Moral dilemmas/debates Math -Students will review all strands during this unit. We will apply problem solving strategies to real life situations throughout all Math strands. -Students will select an appropriate method for solving a problem. (ie: mental estimation, written strategies, using a calculator) I.C.T Students will be introduced to Google Documents and will create a collaborative presentation document to celebrate their classmates and the end of Grade 2. Students will continue to develop their keyboarding skills using various websites. Arabic Arabic A Students will learn vocabulary related to a problem in a story and they will continue to work on recognizing the characteristics that are involved in procedural writing. They will read poetry and identify its features. Arabic B. students will learn how to sort objects into categories by sounds and first or last letter. They will learn about clothing and vocabulary related to it. Music In Music and Strings, students are finishing their year by reviewing the skills they have learned. In Music, students are consolidating steady beat, solfege skills, playing on xylophones, and moving to music. In Strings, students are working on their songs, Hot Cross Buns and Mary Had a Little Lamb, practicing bow technique, articulation, and sound quality. The students will be learning to play their D Major scale. Library Students will continue to work using Destiny Quest. Students will inquire into the non-fictions sections, specifically the biographies. They will read stories related to conflict and conflict resolution. They will have the opportunity to dramatize stories and role play alternative endings to stories. P.E. Students will be learning the importance of teamwork, cooperation, conflict resolution, problem solving and communication in adventure challenge activities. They will learn how to resolve problems peacefully and how they can show respect for other team members. The Arts Students will discuss how to solve problems that arise in their art and look at them as opportunities to make it better or develop a new idea. Students will learn strategies to refine art work and to work collaboratively on projects.
