Ms. Toni eck
!n my first year as a Ready Set Teach intern" ! #as honored to assist Ms. eck in her first $rade
classroom. Ms. eck #as an o%tstandin$ teacher #ho made me feel #elcome as soon as !
introd%ced myself to her. &er classroom consisted of t#enty fo%r kids that came from different
ethnic and ed%cational 'ack$ro%nds. Ms. eck ta%$ht me the many #ays that #ill in my later life
assist me in teachin$ my o#n class. She #as a teacher #ho took her teachin$ (o' serio%sly and #as
a dedicated teacher for #hom the st%dents #ent first. Ms. eck #as a someone #ho lo)ed to help
others %nlock their creati)e minds and aspirations 'y $i)in$ incomin$ teachers assistant and time"
so that they co%ld also 'ecome teachers #ho took their (o's serio%sly .*orkin$ #ith Ms. eck " !
learned ho# hard the career of an ed%cator can 'e. My host teacher is an inspiration for not only
me '%t all incomin$ f%t%re teachers" for she has set the standard of ho# to cond%ct a first $rade
classroom.
The first $rade classroom that ! attend consist of t#enty fo%r acti)e kids" #ho like to 'e on their
feet and mo)e aro%nd. *hen ! first entered my host classroom" ! entered a classroom that #as
r%nnin$ smoothly #ith a'o%t thirty st%dents. Thro%$ho%t the year" ! ha)e seen st%dents lea)e from
her classroom and ne# st%dents arri)e" for e+ample" (%st one month a$o" Ms. eck recei)ed a ne#
st%dent. Each st%dent in the class had a %ni,%e ,%ality to them" for each st%dent came from a
different ethnic 'ack$ro%nd for instance in the host classroom" ! ha)e a en$ali" &ind%" M%slim"
-ietnamese" &ispanic and many different ethnic. Each st%dent comes from a %ni,%e 'ack$ro%nd"
#hich effects their En$lish dialect" '%t Ms. eck helps %nite her #hole class and make them feel
like one.
Ms. eck teachin$ style is a %ni,%e style that ! #o%ld someday like to incorporate into mine. She
%ses technolo$y to teach the st%dents the lesson. This method helps the st%dents learn in an e+citin$
e+perience" for technolo$y hooks their attention to the screen . My host teacher also %ses a lot of
hands off acti)ities that en$a$e the st%dent in the lesson in a f%n #ay that capt%res their attention
and teaches them. .ro%nd the classroom" Ms. eck has posters #ith )ario%s colors that try to help
the st%dents remem'er the important detail" and also" the classroom is or$ani/ed in a #ay that
makes the classroom na)i$a'le to mo)e aro%nd in and on top of e)erythin$. She keeps the st%dents
or$ani/ed for a more efficient learnin$ en)ironment.
Ms. eck tries to create a family en)ironment in her classroom" and she is hi$hly accomplished in
her $oal. The st%dents and my host teacher ha)e allo#ed me to 'e part of their family. ! ha)e
learned ho# to re#ard st%dents" and ho# to efficiently p%nish st%dents. ! am $ratef%l to#ards Ms.
eck for allo#in$ me to shado# her" and ! #o%ld like to incorporate parts of her teachin$
philosophy to my o#ns someday.
!n my second year in RST" ! e+perienced another host classroom that #as different from the first
one. Ms. 0ri//ard has a classroom in #hich the children ha)e lots of ener$y" and the di)ersity in
the classroom #as limited '%t does not mean the classroom is lackin$ anythin$. Ms. 0ri//ard does
not %se as m%ch as technolo$y as Ms. eck" and she did not decorate her classroom like Ms. eck.
Ms. 0ri//ard is different. She has art#ork of her st%dents han$in$ from the #all. &er #alls ha)e
cards that st%dents %se to read 'ooks creatin$ an interacti)e atmosphere in the classroom. Ms.
0ri//ard is a little %nor$ani/ed" '%t she kno#s #hat to do. 1ike Ms. eck" Ms. 0ri//ard has
created a family en)ironment #ithin her classroom" and ! en(oy e)eryday #ithin the classroom.
